Ridiculous i8 issues on the road
I got my 2016 i8 in May of this year and at 5,000 miles it has now given me huge problems.
Last week while driving home 2 signals went off.. Drivetrain: Vehicle cannot be restarted Regenerative braking not available The next day when I started the car it said all systems ok. 5 days later again both signs went off 15 minutes into my drive. Now everyday 15-20 minute into my drive both go off and yesterday the biggest issue yet arose. As I was getting into a tunnel I got a notification on the dash that "Charging Malfunction: battery is not recharging. Stop carefully and consult nearest service center. As soon as this went off the car started making a loud rattling noise for 10 seconds and then wouldnt go faster then 13 mph even as I floored the petal. I caused traffic due to this in the tunnel and as soon as I got out of the tunnel I pulled over and turned the car off. When I turned it on again a minute later it drove fine enough to get me home. I called the BMW service center in Manhattan and asked for an emergency service appointment right away. As I drove to them (45 minute drive from my house) again the first 2 signs went off then as I was 10 minutes away from the service center the "charging malfunction" sign went off again, followed by the rattling noise (cant tell if it came from the front or back) and the car again going 13 mph so I quickly stopped at a red light turned off the car and turned it back on which led me to finish the drive to bmw. They took the car in and gave me a bmw 320 loaner until next week. This is pretty ridiculous for a car with a sticker tag of $148,000 that I got brand new in May. |

Sorry to hear about your problems, I would be so upset if it happened to me as well .Your right, this is is not acceptable but happens nevertheless
I have heard Drive Train Error messages but not this one that restricts the speed of the car just crawling 13 mph

Now its been almost a full week that its at the service center and this si what happened..
"We have a REM (Range Extender Module) computer control module on order for you." Unfortunately, it’s a part that failed pre-maturely. As with any computers, unfortunately, sometimes these things can happen, even on a brand new car. Sorry about this. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thank you."- my service advisor. BMW better give me at least a month credit. This is my 3rd BMW back to back to back and after 5 months this is ridiculous to happen to a car with a sticker price of $148k. |
