Considering a new IX40 (moving from an X6)
So I'm considering moving into a 2025 IX40 from a 2022 X6. It'll be my first EV, so I'm just seeking any feedback from those of you more experienced in this new world of cars.
Pros? Cons? What should I expect moving from the X6 into the IX? Thanks in advance! |

So, this is a huge big blanket Pros & Cons ask... Are you familiar in general with the electric vehicle pros & cons? For example, the quick two criteria to consider are:
Stuff you can expect when moving from an X6 an IX:

#1 can you daily charge at home? #2 does 80% of the range you'll see cover at least 90% of your daily, non road trip driving? The 40i only offers 350km of range. To be clear that will be what you can get in perfect summer weather conditions. In colder weather, you lose a lot of that range. If you are in an area with very mild winters, that can be ok but in areas where you get really cold winters, for many folks the resulting range of the 40i in those conditions is just not enough. |

As others have mentioned: if you can swing, it I’d look into an ix50 due to the larger battery which would be extremely useful in Canada imho.
If you’ll only use the iX40 for relatively short journeys and aren’t worried about residual value; (in that a ‘40’ might well be more difficult to sell than a ‘50’), then the 40 would work fine. |

Homecharging is key, public charging is almost more expensive per KM than gas and takes longer, so if that is your only option then be aware of that. There can of course be reasons to chose a BEV anyways. For daily driving and commute a BEV is absolutely fantastic and better than an ICE-car in every way, can’t think of kne thing that a ICE does better in daily commute. This is coming from a guy who really enjoys fun cars and nice sounding ICE (loved my M340i) The drawback is of course range, charging times when going on roadtrips. My main concern is actually not the charging time itself and having to stop every 300-400 km, but possible waiting at the popular charging stations when travelling during peak season to ski resorts. If you pull in and then have to wait for 1 hour for a free charger, it would be quite annoying. This is not a BEV issue, but an infrastructure issue, so given your travelling pattern and infrastructure this can be worth considering. |

I would recommend waiting 6 months for the IX LCI. The IX40 will be replaced by the IX45 which will be a much more usable car with it's 95 KWH battery. In my opinion the IX40 has a too small battery for normal use for most people.
If you drive a IX40 in winter on the highway with about 80 MPH i think you will have a realistic range of only about 100 miles between reloads. For me that is just not enough. The IX45 will change this significantly, and i do not think BMW can raise the price for the IX 45 compared to the IX 40 too much in this market. |

Great point. This is probably the worst possible time to buy an xDrive40, unless it is an absolute smokin' hot deal.

1) I did not even get the level 1 charger day 1 so was totally without home charging! When I did get the level 1 charger cable I was ecstatic - yes charging is slow but the fact that I could do it at home was a game changer. 2) I have used some fast chargers outside and sometimes there is a waiting line - got 3 months' worth free with electrify america. 3) I am in the process of installing a L2 charger at home. 4) The car is a little smaller than the X6 - most notably less trunk space. 5) Yes great pickup and torque - beats the X6 40. 6) I went from B&W to Harmon Kardan - HK is great but I hear that B&W in iX is really awesome. Miss my lit up diamond tweeters ![]() 7) I have the 21" wheels because that's what the stock model came with - I hear it's worst among wheel sizes for range. They look better than 20's. 8) Stock model I took did not have air suspension - I had that on X6. Car is a little stiff in NE US but I got used to it. 9) I did get all the auto guidance systems and recommend those highly - when on highway adaptive cruise control is a must! 10) Lease on new iX was much cheaper than new X6 which is why I went with iX 11) I do miss my X6 - it was the best bimmer I ever had - iX is close (I even moved my rear folding tables over) 12) I hope there's an electric X6 when my lease ends, 3 years from now! Anything else I can help with, just hit me up! Last edited by Kripster; 01-02-2025 at 05:53 PM.. |

Previous cars for me were 2 X5s, a 2014 X5 50i, and recently a 2020 X5M Comp.
I really like the iX for all the reasons people have already mentioned, so I'll go for the big differences. 1. Sound - if you like the way engines sound, rev, RPMs, etc - this experience will be very different. 2. Torque - the instant and linear availability of power makes my X5M Comp feel slower, but the M still "felt" more powerful because of the overall package. 3. The handling is good, but the compensation for the even heavier vehicle makes it feel EVEN MORE NUMB than other heavier cars (yes, you too BMW) these days. 4. Level 2 charging at home rocks - as long as you don't expect to road trip this without taking all the extra time, it's awesome. 5. It's very quiet, luxury, and sort of soft and rubbery feeling compared to gas cars. I swapped into my Bronco Wiltrak today after a month straight in the iX and it felt bumpy, jaggedy, jerky, etc. But then after driving it for 20 minutes I remembered why I like gas cars too - the feel of imperfection is a good thing too. Bottom line, great vehicle, the lease deals are phenomenal, super comfy and fun, probably the best EV in its narrow class right now. I think it's way overpriced (I got the M60), but the discounts, credits, and money factor made it a no-brainer. Based on my driving needs, I still need (and love) gas vehicles too for road tripping, towing, and visceral sound/feel that I still really enjoy. |
