Rear parcel shelf update

One of our M60s started to really creak/rattle from the rear parcel shelf. I checked, and I had the original "04" shelf part #.

I removed the rear piece of the parcel shelf (the one that sits behind the rear seats).

I used a little German automotive grease (but white lithium would work fine too) and I put a small amount on each of the areas where the parcel shelf snaps into and together (on the actual shelf, and the part on the side that is in the car).

100% silent, even in cold morning drives!

I do hear some rattling going on until I get to highway speed. It sounds like it’s something coming from the front, but I have not spent any time troubleshooting it yet. I wonder if this it’s the same issue.

It could be. The iX is so quiet, and without an ICE, sounds really are hard to pinpoint.

Since we have two iX, we both noticed our M60s have some more front noise, than the two iX 50s we had prior. It's almost like tire or suspension noise. NOT bad at all, and since both do it....seems normal. The 50 was silent and squisher of a ride.

I have the “05” updated parcel shelf and still have the creaking noise. I removed it and the noise disappeared. I reinstalled it and it was quiet for about 2 days and it is now creaking again. The dealer wants to record it and send it to BMW for advice since I already have the newer shelf.

Is there a part number somewhere on the bottom that indicates which one you have? I haven’t gone and looked at mine yet. Thanks.

Yes, once you remove the parcel shelf, there is a label/sticker on the underside. Mine says 04. 05 is the newer version. There are pics, maybe even in this thread.

I just had mine service for recall and noise in rear. They put felt tape where the rear parcel shelves connects and no more noise. Also, different topic they checked all 4 tires for wear and the driver front was labeled as marginal and the vehicle has 2600 niles on it. I don't believe it though.

Seen that a number of people got there creaking fixed with felt tape. Would really appreciate i pic or description of how/where the tape is applied. Would be great to avoid a workshop visit

Can buy a tire tread gauge and check yourself. My 20” Goodyears started off with 8/32.

You should follow up with them because that is not normal and would possibly justify a replacement under warranty. They either noted the wear wrong or there is an actual issue here. One tire wearing differently would suggest a misaligned suspension. If there is no noticeable damage to the vehicle as a result of hitting a curb or nasty pothole, I would argue that it they sold you the car this way and it needs to be rectified. I believe it is supposed to be checked as part of the PDI (that you paid for) and so they either didn't do it, did it and messed something up when adjusting it or it was aligned ok but something wasn't torqued to spec at the factory.

Due to the airbag service bulletin affecting most of our vehicles, I would definitely wait to take your vehicle in for service without calling your service advisor in advance. Otherwise you they may not return your vehicle back to you until that service bulletin turns into a recall, and is completed. There is a huge liability for both BMW and the dealership if they release a known faulty vehicle back into the wild.

Consider this: if there is a major safety issue on a vehicle (in this case, one that doesn’t even have a fix yet), they would have a major liability by releasing it to you knowing that there is an active safety issue. Not only would BMW be liable, but so would your local dealership in case something happened after they released it back to you.

I don’t know what the legalities of that would be, but I would assume there is some sort of Department of Transportation law or regulation that would prevent them from releasing it back to you. Perhaps they would return your vehicle to you if you signed a waiver, but it would definitely go on your vehicle history. The best bet is to check with your service advisor before going to drop it off.

I know you have already seen this, but for those of you that haven’t, this came directly from my service advisor yesterday when I inquired about this service bulletin.

I'm not doubting what you were told, I just don't think it's the full story.

BMW can try to keep your car, but if you say no they have to give it back to you. They can have you sign waivers or whatever they need to cover their legal butts, but legally they cannot keep your car without your permission. Period. There is no DOT rule regarding allowing recalled cars to be confiscated. If there were, it would have been national political theater. The situation may be different for a leased car, which you technically do not own.

If it doesn't pass the sniff test it's not true.

Now we have this going in two threads. There is no fix yet, so there’s no purpose for me to bring mine in. I was only sharing this here in case someone decided to take their’s in for a simple parcel shelf issue. It’s most certainly going to come up in the conversation.

I appreciate you mentioning the possibility as I will be going nowhere near the dealer until this is sorted!

I said this before many times, and I’ll keep on saying it. This is precisely why I take care of my service advisors and their managers. It never hurts to give them occasional tickets to concert or sporting events. I gave them Amazon gift cards for Christmas. They always bend over backwards to take care of me and give me straight answers.

This never occurred to me. If you're a repeat BMW buyer, it makes sense. I give a Christmas gift to my trash collector, who does the worst, most gawd-awful job, so why not the people I may actually benefit from.

I do the same, including the mailman! And yes, I’m a repeat buyer. I know a lot of people in various departments at my preferred dealership and I like to take care of them. I can’t tell you how many times they’ve done me favors like giving me a brand new car to drive when they were out of loaner cars.

They could not find an iX vehicle for me to buy, so I bought one from a dealership in another part of the state. That still didn’t stop my sales advisor from checking on the incentives, even though it wasn’t going to benefit him at all. I didn’t even ask him to do it. I really love Momemtum BMW here in Houston.

YES, YES, YES!! Service Advisors, Salesperson, Sales Mgr. and even General Mgr!! We regularly bring in pastries, wine, Holiday gifts, send them referrals, thank you cards, post social media praise, write positively to Corporate, etc... I have done this since the early 90s. It goes a long way!!!

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm gonna start doing this. I had an E46 back in the day but starting in late 2019, we bought an X7, X3M, M4 Convertible, an i4 M50 and I just signed for an iX M60 (dealer agreed to let me out of the deal at my option depending on how long this stop sale takes).
