Induction loop would be the cool way of doing it, and in keeping with the car itself. But it could still have a micro USB socket as an alternative (or sole) charging method.
We could charge it anywhere then, including sitting at our PC. Most importantly, either would allow the car to charge it, and be driven. There is one issue though. If the battery dies away from a USB point, how do you unlock the car to get to the charging point? Perhaps a battery warning indicator on the main key. It could also drop down to a failsafe mode that conserves battery power when low, leaving only the unlock car feature capable of running. |

Those were my concerns too. Maybe BMW will provide one Display Key and one regular key (just in case the Display Key's battery dies LOL).
As the i3 owner pointed out, all the functionality of the Display Key is available via the BMW i smart phone app. So I guess we could all live without the Display Key if BMW don't release it to the wider i8 audience. |

Another possibility being again a small and separate, though rechargeable battery that only powers the core functions (lock/unlock/signal for start) which gets charged up regularly when the keyfob is charged, but only discharges when the regular battery is dead, allowing the standard key fob functionality to continue to work. Seems like potentially stranding an i8 owner because they forgot to or couldn't charge the Display Key would be a pretty big engineering blocker from the get-go when putting forth a concept like this. Providing a "backup" regular key fob is a less elegant solution in my opinion versus added complexity of multiple batteries in the Display Key. |

Fingers crossed that they go ahead with it, and adopt the more elegant solution
By the way, I compared the USA and UK "Build your i8" websites, and it was interesting that the USA site had hardly any options. Is this because those options are unavailable in the USA, or because they are all included as standard? On my ordered car, I selected the following for example (among other things): Carpo interior Turbine Wheels Blue seatbelts Driving assistant Harman/Kardon loudspeaker upgrade BMW Online services Internet Information Plus Tracker 5 services (incl parts, fluids, labour, but excluding brake pads) |

@JasH, i meant if you received the test drive car for a longer time and what were the terms? Want to compare some things.
Also, what color have you opted for? |

Mine was originally due end of last year, but was then pushed back to Jan-15, and then Feb-15 (in which case I was going to take delivery in Mar-15 due to the reg. change). But I've recently been told it has been pulled forward to mid Dec-14. So midway between a 64 reg and a 15 reg, and arriving at the start of winter just before Xmas :/ So I'm not sure what to do at this stage - take delivery in December, or postpone it until March next year. Bad news on the display key. According to my source within BMWNA, none of the MY14 cars will have it (other than the Concours edition), though it may be offered later next year. No more concrete info beyond that.

Mpgrant, mine is arriving May 2015. Ordered earlier this month.
Carac, wow you guys in the USA are certainly getting a sweet deal Dany, no I only had the demo car for the two test drives I wrote about in the first post in this thread. There were no terms. Mine is Crystal White Pearl with Caparo Light interior and turbine wheels. I'd rather receive it in March 2015 if I had a choice Dronline, that is bad news |

I think they should make Display Key a free upgrade to MY2014 early adopters when it becomes available.

btw, I was at Brands Hatch again a couple of weeks ago. 31 July 2014. In-car footage from my Lotus, tussling with a couple of 911s. The 911 Turbo nearly lost it on Clarke Curve |

ddk & chylld, thanks
The 911 Turbo driver is a friend and work colleague, so he was trying a little too hard to stay in front and over-cooked it. Nicely held though by him. I can't wait to get my i8 on track next summer. Not a track car of course, but I do feel the need to try it once at least, to see how she handles under extreme conditions. |

That reviewer above seems to start off a bit cool about the car, but absolutely adores it by the end My favourite review is this one though (definitely a re-post, as I found it in this forum): |

Yes, the XCAR review was really great. The best detailed footage and sunset shots of the i8 in that review, by far.
