Any other i8 owners with a deposit on the Porsche Taycan?
I'm looking forward to the Porsche Taycan when it becomes available as a replacement for my Model X. I've had a deposit in on the Taycan for several months now. I know Porsche is seeing a lot of these deposits from Tesla owners.
Any other i8 owners in the forum who are in the advanced deposit group for the Taycan?

Apparently its worth $2500!
Porsche claims they will meet/deliver all standing reservations within the first year of production. Reportedly they increased production from 20,000 to 40,000 units to meet this demand: https://www.thedrive.com/news/26851/...e-by-years-end ...and we will get three free years of public charging! (Although I've NEVER used a public charger in all the years I have owned my 3 EV's...)

I'm potentially interested in the Taycan to replace my i8 in a few years, but still have concerns over range anxiety for longer trips into the hinterlands where EV chargers are less common. Also want to see what the next gen i8 has to offer, now that it appears BMW is pursuing one.

I had an LOI in for it... until I saw how much they had watered down the concept. The leaked version looks so ordinary.
I've minimal interest in it now. |

Found this very interesting article reviewing a pre-production Taycan Turbo (obviously there are no turbos, but that is the designation for the top of the line model). Performance sounds very impressive, though I still can't decide how I feel about the look of the car. Strikes me as a somewhat smaller version of the Panamera, which I'm not too crazy about. And then there is still that issue of range anxiety with a pure EV. Even that will be a thing of the past if 800V charging systems become more commonplace, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

Our Model X is our daily driver (248 mi) and we simply plug it in when we get home at night and unplug it in the morning. (Like us, over 70% of EV owners charge at home vs using public chargers). I've never even SEEN a public charger. Its MUCH more convenient than an ICE as we never have to think about filling it up and most of the time I have no idea what the current price of gas is... If you have a garage and (and your spouse/family) a second car (ICE) for long trips, then a 200+ mile EV is a pretty sweet option... I can drive from Milwaukee to Chicago and back and never have to stop to charge. I've never had a "daily range challenge" (in 5 years) and only had to consider an ICE for long road trips (or hauling my M4 Track car and trailer). Since we simply charge at night, I couldn't care less about the 800V charging capability. The Taycan will be replacing our Model X as our DD so its not a very high bar to improve the external styling. Now that high-end car manufacturers are finally cresting the 200 mile EV range, I'm looking forward to see what they can provide to compete with Tesla!

I understand and agree with most of your points concerning range anxiety. My issue is that although we have a second family car that we could take on longer trips, I love taking road trips in my car, so am concerned about charging options in some more remote locations (e.g. national parks, where I'm headed next month).

I'm just not gonna use my EV for long trips (200+ miles). However, they don't come up all that often. (Although I just took my i8 on a 1500 mile road trip, my Model-X is still my daily driver. I don't really consider my i8 to be an EV due to its very short range...) In any case, Yellowstone has 6 EV charging stations: https://www.nps.gov/articles/evcharging.htm and other National Parks are adding them as well: https://www.nps.gov/articles/evstations.htm

I'm not expecting too many here in Wisconsin! My biggest consideration at the moment is whether to wait for the release of the Turbo S model or just pull the trigger on the Turbo.
As I don't lease my vehicles, depreciation is more relevant in my case. However, I seldom select my vehicles as an investment (hence the i8). Its usually more of an "emotional" choice!

Not sure about that...
I'm #8 on my local dealers Taycan deposit list and another dealer only a few more miles away has at least that many as well! ...and those numbers were from back in January, so I expect those lists only got longer...

Been on order for two+ years... received my confirm some time ago. Lease on the i8 ended so I'm in a M2C for now... may be hard to let it go... hoping it looks closer to concept than recent spy shots.

Definitely interested in the Taycan but worry about the long wait lists at dealerships (and especially here in California). May wait to see how the 1st iteration goes before pulling the trigger...

Last I heard there were over 20,000 with deposits on the car and Porsche said that they would increase their annual production (from 20K to 40K) to meet the demand. It appears they are trying to satisfy all deposit holders within the first year of production. I can live with that. (I actually savor the wait for my cars - I've waited over a year each for my last three and NEVER buy off the lot...)
But, I get the "first run worries"... There could be value in waiting. I have been happy with my first year i8 Roadster though! The other question is WHEN to pull the trigger on a deposit. I've heard that the high output "Turbo S" variant of the Taycan will be delayed (maybe 6 months) after the two initial models being released. So being a couple people back in the queue at a dealership might actually provide more model options. (I might even wait a couple of months anyway if necessary).

The taycan will lease like sh*t for a while if Porsche history repeats itself. Some buyers will be sensitive to that. Also some people I know around here are super Tesla fanboys etc. I’m excited a 2 door and conv variant from Porsche/Audi. Last edited by Barago; 07-04-2019 at 06:12 AM.. |
