Independent German Company offers Battery Upgrade

Saw a post in the German Goingelectric forum about an independent Company located in Munich which offers battery upgrades for i3 and i8.
https://www.eworks-mobility.de/leistungen

At least an upgrade on the 2018 pack is no longer guesswork.

I'd be really interested to know the cost too. Great news that an independent company has started doing upgrades though.

Sounds very much like the pack of the current i8. Not cheap for + 20km EV range. But good that the option exists.

Give it another 2/3 years and they will double the range and / or slash the price by 2.

This kind of revolution in energy density has been hoped for for years now, but optimizing volume, weight, discharge and charge power, cycle lifetime, safety, price, environmental impact in production, etc. all at the same time only allowed for small evolutions (85 to 100 kWh e.g. at Tesla and they did jeopardize charge speed at high states of charge in the process). So as nice as it would be, don't bet on it.

Ever heard of Moore’s Law?

Moore's law itself has broken down with structures reaching physical quantum limits. So you deliver the example why there will not be an endless development in Lithium Ion Batteries. There is some potential of course and we will see e.g. graphene electrodes improving charge speed, hopefully not jeopardizing another important property.

Doesn't matter, batteries can only be a bridge technology to H2 that can also power ships and planes because of the energy density. And as a bridge technology I am happy with evolution.

I think this makes a strong case for the current i8!? Here in Norway a used 15 i8 + € 10.000,- takes you close to an almost new i8 especially when you take the extended warranty that come with a newer car into account.

Nachbar That's the numbers I've got also.
Looks attractive to me but will do that only when the old pac will have lost relevant capacity because the i8 not my DD.

Leto1701 After reading many in depth studies I'm no longer convinced about FCEV. It is way behind in terms of efficiency (factor 1.5-2) and the great advantage for the BEV is the simple power outlet everybody has at home. H2 stations are very expensive. For 60 Miles it needs 7L of water.
For ships and aircrafts it's most likely the solution but I doubt we will see that as final solution in cars and even trucks.

Birdland I'm always shocked to hear what you pay even for used i8 in Scandinavia. Lately a Danish user wrote about their horrible prices. Here in Switzerland it's completely different, although prices seems to stabilize now, after EOL of the car was announced.

You are right in a sense that H2 in applications where there is an alternative like in most cases small batteries, etc. is not going to make it before there is an abundance of regenerative energy. Exactly because of what you say. But once that problem has gone away... we will see. The i8 batteries are fine in the new model and in this offer. I would like 50% more range in the same size/weight package but not badly. Less weight same range would also be fine.

Of course, at the moment we cannot say with certainty which solution will prove to be the most efficient and cleanest in the distant future.
And I would also say that Germany, in particular, is already making impressive progress in the field of renewable energies, despite all the opposition from certain lobbies and citizens incited by them.
And yes, 50% more is not bad at all and also that it is now guaranteed that the batteries can also be replaced by external companies
