There is some additional space under the cover:

LOL.…sure that adds 5 liters max.

Still a glaring miss.

This is a BIG fail from BMW.
So I wasn't that wrong after all, I own a 2020 X5 and immediately you feel the difference on the cargo area capacity

I wonder why BMW is not taking advantage of the sides of the trunk. Looks like there's a lot of space to be wasted behind the 2nd set of rear lights...?

X5 has space underneath as well, and seemingly more of it.

Not really. Yes, X5 has some space under the cover, but it is shallow and you can't put much there. You can place things like lithium jump starter, inflator or snow brush type small items.
But iX is very deep and likely more usable.

I haven't seen the iX in person, but from the pic, looks like narrow and deep (iX) vs larger and more shallow? Depends upon what you want to put there I guess, but neither are game changing space and it becomes fairly useless if you regularly keep anything sizable in the main cargo space that would have to come out to get below..

I see the cargo area specs on MotorTrend for the iX50 as 36/78 cu ft (second/first row):

https://www.motortrend.com/cars/bmw/ix/

Compared to the 2022 X5 at 33.9/72.3 cu ft:

https://www.motortrend.com/cars/bmw/x5/2022/

Listed elsewhere pretty much the same - a disconnect here somewhere?...

I have no idea how motortrend calculates that cargo area behind the rear seats but that looks wrong. I own an X5 and compared it using a measuring tape to an iX when my dealer had one for a couple of days. The X5 definitely has a bigger trunk. From what I remember when we literally measured them, they had the same width, same depth, but not the same height or shape/slope of the hatch. That's where you lose some capacity in the ix vs the X5. The official BMW numbers of 500L for the iX vs 645L in the X5 properly reflects the difference in real useable trunk space IMHO (iX has 77% of the X5 trunk volume), with the caveat that it only becomes a real problem if you tend to actually use the area above the height of the rear seat backs. If you don't use that space, the difference, if any, is negligible.

Thanks! What I suspected as well - it's interesting that the volume capacities I mention are similar from a variety of sources, but I have no idea if those were pre-production "guesses" or numbers actually provided by BMW. In practical use, I would guess the actual "use case" for both cargo areas would be similar, unless you routinely stack luggage to the headliner. I have both the compact spare and the Luggage Package in my X5, which I think trims a few liters off anyway, and I've never had a problem carrying anything I wanted with the second row down.

This.

The trunk use case I was worried about was the family road trip with 2 adults, 2 kids and the dog (once or twice a year), where we need the trunk to hold our suitcases/bags and have a space in the middle to allow for our dog to be there, as we have with the X5. I was initially worried that the trunk was much more narrow and not as deep as the X5 because the pics made it look small. That's why I brought my measuring tape to verify it and was happy to see that it was just as wide and deep. I would have liked it to be shaped more like the X5 and be just as tall but it was by no means a deal breaker for me, but I can see that others may not be as content with its size. The reduced height may make it a little trickier to easily fit in irregular shaped items.
