Integral Active Steering?
Hello all,
I'm formulating my build spec and I want to have air suspension on both axles. My current X5 has them and I love the smooth ride. However it seems like the only way to get them on iX is by getting Dynamic Handling package, which also comes with Integral Active Steering. I've never had BMW with active steering. And many many years ago, I once test drove a 5 series E60 with active steering at that time and I didn't like it. I hope they've improved the steering feel after these many years, but I'd like to hear comments from others about this. Thanks! |

Had it on my previous two X5s and current cars, and I wouldn't have an SUV without it - particularly one the size of the iX. It dramatically reduces the turning radius when parking and improves high speed handling. There is no downside, other than additional cost, but worth it, to me. The 5 Series you drove had a variable steering ratio depending on your speed and was completely different than IAS, which turns the back wheels.

It was a good idea in theory, but in practice I can imagine having different steering ratios depending on your speed must have felt weird. My X5 doesn't have IAS and I did not notice anything weird about the iX steering during my two test drives. It was easier to park than the X5 and reminded me of my X4 at low speeds which felt a lot more nimble than my X5. Anyway, here is a video explaining the E60 version for anyone curious as to what they were trying to do with it. |
