Lotus Elite: A diminutive English sports car with unique features made from 1957 to 1963. (about the same as the minimalist Lotus 7.) Pirelli Cinturato 155/HR-15 tires. The 1960-61 list price in the U.S. was $4,780 -- expensive!

Early models had a problematic gearbox; later models got an excellent ZF. The plastic bodies were sometimes known to sag.

Honda made tiny sports cars from 1963 to 1970 in three series: the S500 (531cc), the S600 (606cc) and the S800 (791cc). Except for the last couple of years they were chain-driven. The DOHC engines borrowed heavily from motorcycle technology and they were high-revving -- 9500 rpm redline for the S500 and S800 and 8500 rpm for the S600. Horsepower increased from 44 in the S500 to 57 in the S600 and finally 70 in the S800. The vast majority were roadsters but the S600 and S800 were offered in coupe form as well.

They were never sold in the U.S., although some were bought in Japan and imported by individuals.

Colin Chapman and Lotus learned their lesson with the Elite: No more plastic unit body cars. The successor was the Lotus Elan, which had a steel backbone chassis. It was not as light as the Elite, but was still small and under 1,600 lbs. It debuted in 1962.

So we went to Matt's shop today and Lisa took the Mini out for a shake down run. Lisa gives it two thumbs up. A few tweeks tomorrow and then we should be bringing her home tomorrow night. Here's a couple of pics. Once we get it home I'll put together a photo record of the resto and some glam shots.
