BMW EVs Will Adopt Tesla NACS Charging Standard!

BMW of North America Expands Electric Vehicle Charging Options for Customers in the U.S. and Canada with Access to Tesla Supercharger Network.
  • BMW Group to Adopt the North American Charging Standard (NACS) for its Battery Electric Vehicles in the U.S. and Canada, Starting in 2025.
  • Drivers of BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce Electric Vehicles in the U.S. and Canada Will Gain Access to Designated Tesla Supercharger Stations in Early 2025.
  • New Agreement Comes in Addition to BMW’s Commitment to Develop a New Charging Network in North America with Six OEM Partners.
Woodcliff Lake, NJ – October 17, 2023…. In a continued effort to provide the best possible electric vehicle charging experience for its customers, BMW of North America and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars NA announced today that drivers of BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce Combined Charging System (CCS) battery electric vehicles (BEV) in the U.S. and Canada will gain access to designated Tesla Supercharger stations in early 2025.

“With six fully electric BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce models now available in the U.S. market, and more to come, it is our top priority to ensure that our drivers have easy access to reliable, fast charging,” said Sebastian Mackensen, President & CEO, BMW of North America. “This agreement is the latest in our longstanding and continued effort to expand charging options for our customers as we continue on the road to electrification.”

The companies will work together in the coming months to create a seamless customer experience enabling BMW, MINI, and Rolls-Royce drivers to find and access available Superchargers on their vehicle’s display, and make payments through their respective vehicle’s brand app.

As part of the arrangement, the BMW Group will also adopt the North American Charging Standard (NACS) for its battery electric vehicles in the U.S. and Canada, starting in 2025.

This agreement is independent of BMW NA’s recently announced commitment, with six other automakers, to create a joint venture company that will build a new, high-powered electric vehicle charging network in North America. The new joint venture will build at least 30,000 new chargers in metropolitan areas and along major highways, which will be accessible to drivers of all battery electric vehicles from any automaker using CCS or NACS charging standards. The joint venture is expected to be established this year, subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals.

Charging is so terrible right now it's a joke. Unfortunately bmw is only committing to access w/ an adapter in 2025..... I hope that timeline changes. I don't understand why the government loves to make Elon richer. Literally every car company etc has to kiss the ring. Should have forced him to put magic docks on his superchargers or just switch to ccs like they did in europe instead we give him taxpayer money to post bullshit on twitter

Hmm. I read this article differently. Doesn't it say that they are working for a solution for current customers over the next few months and that in 2025 BMW's will have Tesla's standard built into all new cars?

This too would be my logical, intuitive assumption. But BMW has worded it in a very ambiguous manner. It literally makes zero sense why an adapter couldn’t be used anytime in 2024 if other CCS cars are getting access on the same timeline. 🤷🏾

Wonder if the hesitance is coming from bmw or Tesla trying to figure out their rollout. Obviously less ppl are going to want a Tesla if you can get a bmw/Mercedes, the charging network is their only real advantage over legacy auto

My guess is that they are trying to slow down the rollout because there will be too much traffic otherwise. Also the new v4 chargers will have the posts/cables in the middle, and won't cause CCS cars to block Teslas when the charging port is on the wrong side.

Otherwise, from Tesla's perspective, they want more CCS cars on their network ASAP. It's very profitable for them! From their latest financial report their gross margins on their energy/battery division was 24%, higher than the auto sales margins.

There are already "Magic-Dock" equipped Tesla Superchargers in 16 states and in Canada and BMWs and any other CCS cars can already charge there via the Tesla app and its "Charge my non-Tesla" feature...

https://www.plugshare.com/map/tesla-ccs-locations

Additional (non-Magic-Dock) access will require more cooperation between the other EV makers and Tesla to work out how to handle payment, since Superchargers in the US don't currently include any sort of point-of-sale system for payment.

Implementations are moving right along. Thanks for posting a link to the map. I'll bookmark it.
