Tariffs start tomorrow. 25% on imported cars. I’m still two years from replacing my iX but this will crush the auto industry. The tariff on parts doesn’t start for a month so if you are in the market for a US made X3 or X5 buy before the tariff on the imported parts hits. It would suck to have a car on order right now.

This was pretty exhaustively debated in another recent thread. My take:

The tariffs are uncomfortable and unpredictable and making it difficult to make a car buying decision in the short term.

For those who are trying to make a decision today, I would pull the trigger as quickly as possible. It seems far more likely that prices would go up in the short-term, so buy ASAP.

For someone who might be thinking about ordering a BMW, and the price would be on the edge of their budget, I would not order. Instead, shop something cheaper or unlikely to increase in price between now and arrival.

Any early orderers of 2026 models who have had the fortune of getting their cars produced before the tariff announcement may be facing a delay of shipping. Anyone out there have a car on the Victoria Highway vessel bound for Baltimore?

I wonder what model is next.

EDIT: Reading that MB may cull cheaper models like the GLA cuv. Could the 2-series GC be on the chopping block?

That raises an interesting question... what import cars will go away? Polestar was already showing weak sales. And as a Chinese company, it had the cards stacked against it in the US market. The Polestar 2 was on my list a couple years ago, but it is a little expensive for what you get. The Polestar 2 sales were very weak. TGH, I wonder if the whole Polestar brand will fold its tent for the US market?

I could see Lucid and Rivian jumping up a lot.

I agree. I wanted a new ICE vehicle for distance travel so I traded a Ford Edge for a deeply discounted 2025 Lincoln Aviator yesterday. Not the car of my dreams but drives good, is well equipped and moderately priced…didn’t want to spend an extra $30,000 to acquire an X7 with similar equipment…though the X7 is nicer. I figure discounts will quickly evaporate in the next 30 days.

Mine isn't on that ship, but there have been 2 ships that have left Bremerhaven, one on the 28th and one on the first, for the west coast port. Another 2 on Wed Thurs this coming week. Hopefully mine makes one of them. It is at Bremerhaven right now. No indication of any delays yet.

There are so many things going on at once. Obviously the tariffs are number one with a huge short-term impact on stocks and soon to impact the economy. There is also the slow death of Tesla with sales tanking.

All of this makes me wonder what will happen with EVs. They have been money losers for the most part and the tariffs will really hit them hard. Tesla made EVs "cool" and now Tesla is a dirty word for many.

Personally I am sitting on the sideline for now until some of this shakes out. I do wonder if the iX could get pulled from the US if the tariffs remain in the long-term. Maybe we will all have collectors cars?

Tariffs are nothing more than the wealthy rigging the system for themselves. Create a great buying opportunity, pick up stocks and other assets on the cheap, then drop the tariffs and make billions as the economy rebounds.

This is nothing short of a plan to funnel money from the middle class up to the wealthy. Because having billions isn't enough. They must have everything. Trump is just a useful idiot for other, much wealthier people who are pulling the strings. Guess who?

JLR announced they are stopping all shipments to the US for the rest of April. No idea what their US inventory is like.

Not sure there are many people in favor of the tariffs and I sure won’t get rich off of them. Feel very bad for everyone impacted by them. This will hit the automotive eco-system hard.

Iirc, Porsche is stopping new product from shipping to the USA; the only cars coming in are those at a US Port, and those already loaded on the carriers in Europe. I believe VW is also suspending new shipments.

Oh, and Porsche is adding the whole 25% tax; (because we all know that’s what it is), to owners hoping to soon take delivery soon, as per Rennlist.
