why does my BMW dealer have 2 dozen "used" 2025 models with 400 to 2600 miles each?

I got bored after 2 hours of waiting for a warranty repair.(liftgate sensor) Walked to the lot and noticed something strange.

There were at least 2 dozen 2025 "used" 2025 models. They included 3, 4, 5, X3 and X7. They all looked brand-new to me, but all were marked as used.

After I got home this evening, I looked on the dealer's website. Those vehicles had 400 to 2600 miles each. All were 2025 models.

What possible reasons can there be for having so many 2025 models as used BMWs on the lot? They are obviously not former loaners because I know for a fact that the dealer only uses X1(U11) as loaners.

In the UK, BMW do favourable short term lease agreements for employees.
At the end of the lease these cars usually go to closed auctions for BMW dealers only.
Handy for dealers as it allows them access to nearly new cars at a considerable discount.
Interestingly cars due to go to performance centres as track day training cars are first run in also on short term leases.

Those could have all ben "punched" to reach an annual or monthly or quarterly sales quota to qualify for a monetary bonus or holdback amount from BMW. From that point it may depend on each state as to what requires them to be sold as "used" cars. They could also be listed with BMW as demos or loaners under the same qualifying-for-bonus game. If you're interested, make sure you are aware of each one's warranty start date, or it may come back to bite you.

Back during Covid times the dealer by me purchased 4 X3M Comps and used them as service vehicles and then sold them at a later date. Sometimes they are used as dealer cars. (My wife bought a Durango that was part of that program with 700 miles on it) They go and pick people up and bring them to the dealer. Some are used for Salesman to show their product. Like they drive them around with a dealer plate on them. Once they have more than a couple hundred miles they cannot be sold as a "NEW" vehicle anymore. To have that many sounds like a lot but the size of the dealership would warrant how many of them they have at a given point.

Same thing with my local dealer where they have about half a dozen new vehicles (which had been sitting for a while) now selling as used. The dealership bought the vehicles, possibly to claim financial incentives from BMW for themselves?

They're former loaner vehicles.

I just had a loaner from the dealer and it was a 25 230i. Had about 1600 miles on it.
They probably run them for a little bit as loaners, claim incentives/credits from BMW if any are available. Then sell the loaner as CPO or some dealers market them as former loaners.

It’s more likely they have been “punched” as opposed to be off service loaners. Once a dealer puts a car in loaner service they usually leave it there for 8,000 - 12,000 miles or 8 - 12 months, unless someone wants to buy it while it is still in loaner service. Most dealers are very willing to sell cars that are in loaner service if someone expresses an interest in buying that particular car.

I am not sure if this is the case with BMW, but I have purchased a GMC and a Jeep from their respective dealerships, where in both situations, they had 10+ current model year cars with 2,000-8,000 miles on them. They told me it was loaners from their dealership and neighboring dealerships. The nice thing is that the warranty started the day I bought it and not the day it went into service, and I got a significant discount on the car. YMMV

They definitely tried to get me to buy mine. Told me the total with my trade in out the door.

After being delayed 2 days over parts delays, I joked with them that 3 days in the loaner, people were thinking I got a new car for sure. He said just take it on home and let them know you did, while showing me the paperwork for it.

Politely declined and still took that muffin and tea from the lobby though lol.

I’m surprised that nobody made the obvious joke: they were slightly-used G45 X3 cars, that the owners didn’t like and traded them back to the dealer for something else.

Obvious? Have you driven an X3 M50? Those things kick ass.

Joke’s on you.

I saw the same thing at one Porsche dealership, when my wife was shopping lightly-used Macan's: one dealer had 4 vehicles with nearly identical specs and (super low) miles. But they weren't the spec we were looking for.

Dealer purchased them and is re-selling them as used. The ol' double dip.

Sensitive much?

Have you searched the board? There is a lot of hate for the G45, irrespective of whether or not it’s justified.

I was lampooning this, yet you took it personally.

So, you could have said that the joke is in fact on them.

Instead, you tried to turn it around on me.

By any chance did you search the board for my comments about the G45? If you had, you would have learned a few key things:
  • I haven’t driven one yet
  • I have sat in one
  • I found the interior too pinball-arcade-ish for my taste
  • I found the front seat far more comfortable than the one in my G01, at least while sitting in the dealership.

I did not make the joke about you. You did that to yourself.
