Possible purchase? Need Guidance 2006 BMW E36 M6

Hello, I am new to this forum, and I need guidance on a vehicle. The E63 M6 has been my dream car for a long time, and I think I finally found the one to pull the trigger on, but not only that but my first M car. Basically, I am looking for guidance on whether or not this is a good buy or not. Need your guys' opinion and thoughts. I will put the VIN and pictures of anything I have below. I live 5 hours away from the car. Another dilemma I've had been I'm not sure if I would want one of these cars that has been modified, not sure how I feel on it. All of the receipt work listed was done BEFORE the dealership took the car in.

The car has 94,000/95,000 original miles. As far as tires go, they were replaced in 2018.

VIN: WBSEH93528CY24630

The good:

No accidents (as I know of)
Clutch has been replaced
Rod bearings have been replaced

The bad:

Multiple owners
Higher miles?
Has been modified (BC coilovers, apple car play, K&N filters)

One more question

Another thing I find odd, is that every time I run the VIN it comes up as a manual but it's an automatic, so would anyone know why that is?

It “looks” nice, but I wouldn’t personally buy a modified car. Find someone you really trust to go over the car.

The mods he was talking about are pretty minor. No engine or drive train mods. I would get an inspection done by an independent BMW mechanic before I would pull the trigger.

I’d take a pass on this one.

The repair invoice on one states the oil cooler fell off while driving with no mention of the car being towed in to the shop so you have to assume he kept driving it. The invoices you shared are all for major items that were failures needing immediate attention.

Are there any invoices that show basic ongoing preventative maintenance?

I actually disagree, if I were to buy an S85 powered car I'd want to be the one doing the rod bearings. That's just me though.

OP - it looks decent, the oil cooler incident scares me a little. Multiple owners is less of a concern. What are they asking for the car?

Thank you guys for all of the responses. They originally were asking $23,000 and dropped the price to $19,000 just within a month, which concerns me a little. As far as other invoices on other repairs I’m not sure, these are the mains ones he sent me.

I DIYed the bearings on my 08 E90 M3 with S65. It was sort of a pain with stock bolts due to the 3 stage torque sequence that is repeated 3 times. I helped a friend do his with ARPs and it was much easier. I looked at the OP’s invoices again and note that the oil cooler went missing after the rod bearings work was done. Depending on how much oil was lost, there could be damage to the new bearings.

That the price was dropped by that much suggests the seller has even less in the car than $19K. And is hoping to land a buyer who is fixed more on price than condition.

Rod bearings done? Mod'd?

Walk away. This is not the car you are looking for.

SMG Gearbox is technically a manual Gearbox.. switched by hydraulics...

I wouldn't touch a modified car like that with that high of mileage. Especially not with the SMG. I'd have a hard time taking it for free.

Looks ok to me and multiple owners can be normal with this sort of car.

It's the same on mine, b/c of the semi automatic label DCT gearbox it comes up as manual on mine too and no '6MT's' were sold on this side of the pond.

No. It is an automatic. Clutch operation and shifting are handled by electronics/hydraulics and require no involvement by the driver.

(I googled the VIN of a MINI 2023 MINI S I owned. The search came up with a bunch of specifications and one was the transmission type and it was listed as having an automatic transmission. The car was equipped with a dual clutch 7-speed sport transmission. All clutch work and shifting was automatic.)

Something is fishy about the car the OP is considering. Just another reason the OP should walk away.

I don't know if it's just an M-car thing with DCTs, but I had a 2018 M2 with DCT that showed up as manual as when I did a VIN check.

As I said I checked a MINI S I owned and its transmission type was listed as an automatic while it had a dual clutch 7-speed sport transmission. Since MINI is pretty much all BMW I figured the SMG would be should be classified as an automatic not manual, but maybe not.

There are still enough reasons to walk away from this car.

The price is low for a reason. I get rid of my german cars with 80K + miles and most of the other owners do as well.

The reason is the cost to maintain is high not including potential problems that "pop up" unexpectedly. If you have $10,000 you can put into the car "just in case" something goes wrong then its a good buy. if your not willing to step up to the plate bigtime then I would have second thoughts.

$19,000 is attractive but we all know the saying...almost always rings true with cars.

Thank you for doing this by the way. I pick them up for pennies on the dollar, learn to wrench on them myself and have an absolute blast modding and maintaining them, and building a personal connection with the car.
