Wet components under the car

The cover under the hood was left uninstalled. I go to the car wash. Well you can just inagine. Wet components and the beeping for a good 10 minutes. After a while it stopped. Thank goidness. We looked it up and it, and sure enough it was indeed wet compinents. Now the car starts fine, but will no longer shift gear. Which componets need replacing? I just got it out of the shop. Big sigh!

May not need to replace anything.

No shift behavior may fix itself if the vehicle is allowed to dry.

But there is the worry about which wiring harness connector was affected by the moisture.

I let it dry for 3 days and Hi Rockcrusher,

After getting wet the car will not shift and it's stuck at 40 mph. Will a scanner pic it up?

TY for your previois reply.

A scan tool -- if it is sufficiently BMW aware -- might obtain a proprietary error code that could shed some light on the cause of the behavior.

But even with code someone will have to get his hands dirty (and maybe wet...).

Likely the fix for this behavior is beyond a DIYer's capabilities.

Think you should arrange to flat bed the vehicle to a highly regarded shop (dealer or indy) for a professional's diagnosis.

I'm having a difficult time thinking the under shield does any protection to the point you would now have a code because of it. Being a 2004 all the connectors should be weatherproof no?

I hope you are right! This is our experience. 🕶️car was beeping a full 10 minutes after the car wash💧It was running just fine prior. I drove with it to help it dry and the beeping stopped while driving. We stopped at a store and back and it started to have trouble. We made it home, but on a crawl in limp mode💔The mechanic will send someone tomorrow🙏. I will update when they get it running properly. TY all💕

How did the car wash water get under the hood? Does rain also get under the hood? Or was the hood left open?

No it's not under the hood itself. It's the bottom of the car where the cover plate is suppose to protect the electronics below the engine. Sorry, I may not be usung the right name of the part.

Hmmm, I am suspecting that you might have another water leak source rather than it being because of your under shield under the car. I never had a 2004 X5 but I had a E46 and if I recall correctly it did have some leak spots to look out for. May be something similar common issues on your X5.

You may be right. When I went to check if there was coolant there was a lot of pressure coming out. It did have problems with that prior. I had to replace the reservoir the radiator. The mechanic said the same, but he told me that problem was resolved.

Oh okok, but yeah by leak I mean like maybe for example the ECU box is letting water in or a leak coming inside your car and reaching fuses or battery or etc.

Yes, you need to pull any codes and follow the data. If the main issue now is the transmission shifting improperly, then I would assume hat the transmission control module or harness/connectors got wet. A missing belly pan may have allowed more water than usual to soak those items. They should be waterproof, but on a 20 year old car may have been compromised somewhat, to begin with.

The error codes should provide a starting point.
