The change happened after I emailed BME Germany asking them to look into it because BMW Australia had been stonewalling me for 4 months. Within 48 hours I got a call from BMW Australia Head Office basically caving, and agreeing to diagnose and resolve at their expense.

I had already presented the evidence that it was not a fault with my car, the BMW sunset page confirming my data services would continue to work, and that the module could of course be replaced (per the BMW NA SIB).

The solution should not require a replacement in most cases. It involves resetting the module to pre-delivery mode, so when it activates, it re-selects the optimum network to use. The BMW tech was able to do this (my local dealer connected their laptop, then gave a tech remote access to diagnose). They only replaced the module because they were unhappy with the signal strength. In the 6 weeks I was then waiting for the replacement part, my remote services (locate car, sound the horn etc.) worked just fine.

Not sure if I can post email addresses here I'll try: kundenbetreuung@bmw.de

Good luck.

I'm going from memory, but if you have no subs active, then you could try going into the ConnectedDrive menu on the I-Drive and telling it to update "BMW Online". When I tried that before the repair, it returned an error "No connection. Unable to connect via the mobile phone network. Please try later or change location." Since the repair, I see a 4G icon in the I-Drive when I go into ConnectedDrive menus (which I never saw before, which suggests it was always relying on 3G).

EDIT - I just saw you drive an M340i. This doesn't affect you. It's only a small number of cars built around 2016, with a hybrid 3G/4G module.
