Where did you read about disengaging a motor while coasting? I haven't read that anywhere.

I'll see if I can dig it up. I remember when I was doing my research back in 2023, I read how BMW is using a different type of electric motor than Tesla that they can turn off at any time, and the Tesla motors must remaining spinning a little no matter what. So it allows a different type of energy optimization, and IIRC, it also allows BMW to blend the regen + physical brakes when you push the pedal since they can seamlessly stop and start the motors.

It's been a while since I read about this, so I'll try to refresh my memory.

Most BEVs have the motors physically coupled to the wheels; only a few have clutches that can physically disengage the motors. So it may be more of a figurative or electric disengagement.

I believe this is it, drive unit explanation by BMW a few years back. Using electromagnets instead of permanent magnets.

Maybe a matter of semantics - electromagnets allow the motor to be in "neutral" when not driving the wheels (no magnetic field resistance). They are still coupled to thr drivetrain, so likely a frictional component to overcome as the axle spins, but no resistance from the motor itself because the rotor has no motive force in the absence of a field. This should produce some significant drive efficiency over the use of permanent magnets, as BMW claims. It does add complexity, so longevity remains a question, but I think I read somewhere that the motors are rated over 100k miles.

Do you know if the 2023 M60s record for accidents or theft?

No. There really are not many of them, so getting meaningful statistics might be a challenge. In general, it is pretty tough to steal a modern car, though there are some exceptions with the Game Boy Hack; fortunately BMW is not on that hit list yet.

Edit: ha, amazing what an apostrophe would do… I misread that question assuming it was missing an apostrophe that would have made “M60” possessive. It will record an accident. Not sure about a break-in.

Do you mean do they record a video during an accident or theft? If there's a significant enough accident, the drive recorder will save a recording of about 30 seconds total including before and after the incident. I believe the same occurs if the anti-theft alarm sounds. You can also manually trigger a recording to save by holding down the camera button as well.
