Safelite says if I want OEM, it's $1434.

Safelite will be only too happy to install OEM glass. The question is who pays for it -- you or the insurer. You may need to push the insurer to get them to agree, but they should in the end.

If you go with non-OEM glass and there’s a minor issue(s) with distortion, etc. 1: it will drive you crazy, and 2: since you’re leasing, BMW may well ding you for the full replacement amount if you turn the car back in with an aftermarket windshield.
Personally I’d never do it. I’d scream bloody murder at my insurance company that it’s a leased vehicle and they need to ante up, but if not, $1434 is what? 1.5% of the cost of the M60? Bish |

I would tell insurance that the iX HUD only works with OEM glass and if they have an issue covering OEM glass then you will contact your attorney and the state insurance commissioner. |

I went in circles with my insurance company and their 'safelite affiliate' glass company that processes glass claims and got absolutely no where. So I decided to call around knowing that I did not have to use Safelite. One local shop checked and could not find any aftermarket glass and said they'd have to use OEM. I switched my claim to them and the insurance company immediately approved it. A big WTF moment. So my appointment is Tuesday. Will update once it's installed.

They tore the fabric on the B pillar and I have to bring it back when the part arrives. But other than that, after 4 hours in the shop, I’m happy!

I got the glass replaced once on my second iX using that warranty at the dealer, and it was a seamless experience. They gave me another iX for a loaner, and the job was perfect. In any case, with vehicles as complicated as these, I'm always going to opt to have the dealer do repairs. |

Also, in my state $100 or $0 deductible glass coverage is a mandated offering by insurance companies, and it’s a few bucks per year. So most people have it. To me, it’s not worth paying for some other plan when my deductible is $0. I get avoiding hassle though.

I suggest that you should always enquire about what your dealer does in house and what they subcontract to other companies. Many people are willing to pay a premium to have the dealer techs do the work and would be pretty annoyed to find out that they subcontract it instead. Things I know are possibly subcontracted are glass repairs/replacements, body work, security devices/VIN etching, wheel repairs, and there are surely others. Your specific dealer may do any or all of these in house but just be aware that it isn't always the case.
I personally had my car tracking system (TAG) installed through the dealer on my past few vehicles, but knowing that hey subcontract it out, I made them match the price of getting it done by the subcontractor directly. (not that I think this system is particularly good, but it pays for itself in 3 years in insurance costs so why not) |

FYI nothing about the HUD is “recalibrated” in any way. The only that that is recalibrated is the ADCAM camera on the upper windshield. And that’s if the tech even performs the service function..

Is there even an aftermarket windshield for the iX? I’m taking mine to Safelite next week and I’m wondering if I need to call and specify OEM.

Yes there is. Safelite had it ready for me before I switched to another shop that was unable to obtain the aftermarket and just had to get an OEM windshield.

General consensus from this forum including comments by a BMW master EV tech is that you do NOT want aftermarket glass (and yes. it exists).

Hopefully your insurance is helping pay for the OEM part. I’ve never had an issue getting State Farm help pay for OEM glass when I mention the vehicle has an HUD. |

New OEM windshield was installed and it has these yellow lines over the sensor area. They weren’t on my original windshield and looking at iX pics here, it doesn’t appear on anyone else’s.

Pretty sure they all have heating elements in that area. If my current never-ending meeting ends I'll go snap a pic.
