This should be well north of €500,000 or at current exchange rates $566,000. All 50 were sold to invitees at a private viewing before shown to the public at Lake Como in Cernobbio last year.

These types of cars are sold to serious collectors where money is no object and will sit in a vast collection with other BMW’s they own.

I have a friend that is at that level and I asked him if he even spoke with a dealer. He said he’ll no, a person within the company calls you and asks are you interested in something being either being considered or proposed to be built and gauges interest with seriously wealthy fans and or automotive collectors.

The person I spoke about had a car built in exposed carbon in a really different color. It was $4,000,000 before taxes. He met with the team at an international car show to view a special car and he chose the specs on the spot since they had all of the build information there.

That person then selects which dealer the car will go prior to delivery.

Some mature manufacturers have a small dedicated team for requests and custom projects to satisfy these private clients. It’s very interesting to hear first hand how these types of cars come to life.

The BMW Skytop is officially going into production, albeit for a limited series, and the first undisguised car has already been spotted on the road before deliveries begin next year. Based on the V8-powered M8, the open-top model will be built in a run of 50 units, just like the reborn 3.0 CSL BMW unveiled in 2022. And yes, they’re already sold out.

The Skytop is powered by the familiar 617bhp 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 that sees action in the M8 on which it's based, sending power to all four wheels via xDrive and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Skytop is a hair slower than the M8 to 62mph, making the dash in a claimed 3.3sec.

The Skytop is a celebration of BMW’s history of roadsters, from the iconic 507 Roadster to the Z8. It’s these that are referenced the most heavily in the Skytop’s design, with the sharknose arrow shape of the bonnet a nod to the former and that tapering tail referencing the 2000s BMW roadster. As is clear from these new images, visual highlights include headlights that have the slimmest profile currently available in the industry yet contain all the necessary lighting functions within.

Unlike some limited-run open top cars, the Skytop does come with a roof, albeit one that has to be removed manually. The two leather trimmed panels can be stowed in a compartment in the luggage area. That it has a roof at all greatly increases the grand touring credentials of the Skytop, though it’s doubtful many [...]
If an Aston Martin and an 8 series had a kid, that car would be it. Gorgeous car, but no where near what it costs, extremely overpriced for what it is.

This must be some weird reverse psychology on uber rich folks. Make ugly ass cars and price them sky high to create desire? How's the XM doing with this strategy?

You got the Game Over part correct. This design was over before it was done.

That’s a classic BMW like the 507/E52. Very different from the current polarising designs like new M3/M5/X3. But nowhere worth near the price tag of 400k.

I think it's too long. I don't get the long hood if it's powered by a V8. Maybe the rear is so huge to carry the roof panel? If the wheels were closer to the doors and about 10" taken out of the overhangs, it might look better.

Yeah not sure on the styling, which is a shame as love the idea. Maybe it’s a grower.

Horizontal slats inside the grille belong to Audi!

BMW slats must be VERTICAL!

Since BMW brought one of Audi designers, they are trying to put more and more horizontal slats…

Not true. This car is inspired from old BMW models such as 507/E52 which had similar grills.

Am I the only one that thinks it's not all that. It's like a thumb with wheels.

Modern BMWs have become so fat/ thick in the mid section. The midsection just is too tall and the fenders lack any real shape or sex appeal. Not all is bad--headlights and tail lights I am liking the aggressiveness.

I'd rather have an M8 as it looks better.

It’s just an ugly 4 series. 400k for that? Are they on crack?

If the rocker panels looks to be the same shape, I may try to swap them on when parts become available.
