I think you just need a closer look. Come on over and I will let you check it out... you will find the undercarriage to be excellently executed - particularly at 50 mph as I pass over you.

(Not that undercarriage pervs. (Yes, I am looking at you smoosh ))
Woah, chill out oldie, we all know you're the resident creepy leg-humping gramps...

Whatever car you decide to go with DO NOT BUY NEW! I never buy new cars, but my last car I did buy new (against my own instincts) and I regret it. I should have just waited until some used one's started showing up and gone that route.

I calculated that my Z4M ended up costing me about $100/month to drive and I sold it to a dealer so would have been less had I waited for a private sale.

There's a ton of much cheaper cars that can be had used or even CPO with a manual transmission.

- GTI
- Cooper S
- Audi S4
- 128/135
- 328/335
- E46 M3
- E85 Z4M
- E90 M3

If your not a german fanboy

- C6 Corvette
- G37S
- ATS
- FRS/BRZ
- Focus ST
- Mustang GT
- Camaro SS

I'm sure theres a lot more I missed.

The op has a good point though. He's smart enough to consider before spending. Obviously we all are too smart to spend a dime on a car, but there must be one normal person around here!

When you determine who is normal, make sure and let us know.

In conclusion:

E92 M3 with a CF roof and ZCP = real M3

I could care less about how people brand my cars. I know that for me, I have a better time in an E93 than in an E92 so I picked the convertible

In reality, it just comes down to what you can afford anyways..
I wanted a high revving NA V8 (or higher # of cylinders) + convertible.. If I could afford an R8 Spyder I would've bought that instead. And if you have the money, who would say no to an Aventador Spyder?

Who cares if it's a "real" M or not.. If Hyundai made this exact same car, I would've still bought it.

but if you have money, why R8 Spyder, why Aventador Spyder? Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Vitesse all the way son!

OP, do not listen to this piece of advice. Buying new vs. buying used each have their pros and cons, but to say to never do x is pretty bad advice.

In fact, since you're in SF, I'd say buying a new BMW would make more sense. Free service and the warranty. Being in SF, you unlikely do not have the means, space, tools, etc to work on your own car.

well, that list is too wide in range. He's look at cars in the 350-450 HP range. No way a BRZ or 328 should be in this conversation.

Again, the best bang for the buck is a E90 M3. Particularly my E90 M3 with 52k miles for $30k.

Good for you for putting $40K in the bank, but do you really want to put half of that into a car? I probably wouldn't do that.

+1 that.
This is my first 2nd hand car. Always bought my cars new. Sure you take a dump on the resale, however the experience to me is priceless from ordering the car to delivery. Not to mention you know everything about the car.

This topic is very subjective on who you ask.

Haha that car is a beast! But I hate the way it looks.

That car would be like having the best sex of your life only to realize in the morning it was Jocelyn Wildenstein

why is 328 vs 335 even a debate? Seriously, what is there to debate on the performance aspect or any aspect of these two cars? Name one point of contention in the 328 camp.

Wastes the real M in a red light race. Different car. Still cool.

I bet the guys over at ferrarichat debate over red calipers vs yellow calipers just as intensely..

Obviously the red calipers are better..
