Stone chip - windshield crack!

Driving home I heard that dreaded pop of rock hitting my windshield, then shortly (seconds) later another pop.
Did my usual swearing about these incidents, took a casual look at my windshield, and saw a brand new crack.
Pulled over to see indeed it was a stone chip that caused the crack.

So it seems the windshields are in stock, and I was surprised to see a 0 deductible on my insurance policy.

Questions are...

How long does it take for the work to get done?
Are there other items involved that might take longer to get in stock?
Anything else I should be aware of with replacing the windshield? It's a lease, and BMW will be doing all the work.

Thanks!

If BMW are doing it your probably safe.

If it's a third party's the screen must be designed for the HUD and the gel pack for the rain sensors must be replaced.

Also screen must have proper tints for cameras etc.

If it's a BMW part they fit as I would expect then should be no issues.

Thanks for the reply.

Yup, definitely BMW to do the repair. Just got the go ahead from insurance. It was quite simple…so far.

Let's hope all the parts come in on time.
I was warned about delays in delivery…

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure it was because of the reports from this forum about cracked windshields that I dropped my deductible to zero!

Dang what she hit! I had something like that but it was from metal falling from a bridge downtown Chicago.

WOW

WTF indeed!

Has the car ever had any damage?
Something must be flexing that isn't supposed to flex to keep causing this. At least that's my only guess.

Sorry late reply!

No damages ever, well that I know about.
It is a COVID baby. Production was March 2020. I think it sat at the NJ docks for awhile.

It's been a couple of months now, with no issues so far on the second replacement. I'm still pretty paranoid on the highway about stone chips.

Wondering if maybe there was an issue with the first replacement install? Although I was told the installer was quite experienced, it was his first i8 windshield install.

Ouch! Did you get to check it with the windshield guy to find out what's wrong with the first replacement install?

I never did get a chance to speak with the window guy. Definitely a conversation I would love to have!
I'm back at the dealer this weekend for my X5, I'm going to try and find the mysterious window guy 😆

Thanks. They tried to charge me, but the next day they called and said they would cover the cost.

I have a crack from a rock etc on my i8. I hear it's a lightweight special glass on the i8 (weightsavings) perhaps why I've had other windows hit harder not ding or crack like this..
