12 years and 130k miles on a BMW diesel is a pretty good run, u deserve to get a new ride.

Have u considered G20 330i or 330e, and if so, what are your thoughts on those vs. i4?

CPOs were always on my shopping list given the cost advantages, but I did pick brand new on last 3 bimmers as my spreadsheets() say owning 3-yr old CPO to 10-yr mark, vs. buying new and holding to 10-yr mark, saves a few $k per new car(i.e. not big savings).

Owning 3-yr old CPO to 13-yr mark(or 10 years of ownership) is another option, although crossing 10-yr mark can trigger refresh costs(e.g. cooling system, brakes, AT service, suspension pieces) that eat up a chunk of CPO savings.

Is your experience similar to the above?
That is my typical experience.
I keep my CPOs for a.decade or so. My 335i just met with a tragic fate at 13 years old and 220K miles on original turbos with no rattle. I've had it for 10 years. I was already planning a new car so it being a catastrophic end to the 335 is not such a big deal.

Anyway I want Tanzanite, cognac leather, M seats, leather dash, 20" wheels, etc. I also wanted the performance of the dual motor.

I need BMW to open configuration for the US.

I had a M3 on order. I was going to have it individual color, but with the chip shortage it kept getting pushed back, and then they announced the i4, so I cancelled that preorder and ordered the i4. I would probably have the M3 at this point, which would be fun, but I'm wondering if the i4 will allow for individual color options.

While not typical, my BMW Diesel is the most reliable car I've ever owned. It looks and runs as new, likely has at least another 100K miles it her. I decided years ago my next car would be BEV thus only researched those. I chose to wait for the i4 and see what it has to offer rather than to jump right to a Tesla.

None of our 3 BMWAG products are near the age or mileage you have. But, I have been impressed at the quality of all three…one from 2015 and two from 2018. No defects/repairs on any of them. I check from time to time to make sure it doesn’t show “Toyota” on the back. I have high confidence for future BMWs.

Is your 2015 228i part of the N20/N26 TC settlement?

2018 B46 should be quite robust and reliable.

It could be, but it will age out of the settlement terms long before the mileage might result in having a problem. This is a second car for me...my "toy". My primary DD is the 3GT. But, even beyond the motors, the entire vehicles have been outstanding, including our third vehicle which is my wife's UKL2 platform-based MINI Countryman S, which is a BMW X1 with a new top hat. All superb.

The N20/N26 TC settlement covers up to 2/2015 production dates, and the settlement waives the age restriction till June 2022, and <70k miles is 100% paid by BMWNA.

Does your Mini Countryman S have a 3-cylinder BMW engine?

Yes, I've read the class settlement document. My vehicle is in the suspect population. I filed an objection with the Court in New Jersey to remove the age limit permanently and extend coverage by mileage alone. That was denied. After 7 years of "toy" car service, I am at 20,000 miles. I'll never see the problem while coverage exists, per the settlement terms. I may proactively just have the fix installed, which will be at my own cost. My car would only have been benefitted by a recall campaign. I intend to never sell this car.

The 2018 Countryman S model shares the X1 2.0L powertrain, not the 3 cylinder.

Wow 20k miles in 7 years, that 228i coupe is garage queen.

So 66.7% of your fleet is B46 engine(same in my 330i).

I truly hope B46 is rock solid with no TC/engine issue, or else it will be engine-out $$$$$ per TIS.

Having said that, indies in US/Europe figure out fixing N47 back-of-engine TC by transmission removal, so it remains to be seen ....

Yep...good weather and fun time driving only. Mods that suit me for fun shown in my signature. Back seat never touched. Passenger on rare occasion when my wife feels brave. The i4 will replace the 3 GT for family/DD usage while the "Queen" gets royal treatment. Even has her own clearly defined throne space!

That is Valencia Orange, right? I like that better Fire or Sakhir.

My friend has Alpine White 228i coupe base model, it handles like E46!

Do u think the i4 have enough trunk space to carry GT hauling duties?

Yes, Valencia...

With M2 LCAs, strut tower brace, Dinan Shockware on the MAdaptive suspension, Variable Sport Steering, Michelin PS4S, this one is very entertaining, tight, yet comfortable. With a 4 up front, it feels very "light on its feet".

i4 cargo capacity remains a concern. I need to inspect before ordering. My test will be whether my bike fits inside without removing the front wheel, as it does in the GT. I also want to check on rear seat room for 2 adults.

G20 330i's 17 cu-ft requires folded rear seats to fit a road bike without taking off front rim.

My guess is that i4's 17 cu-ft also requires folded rear seats to do the same.

Encouraging, thanks!

Still have Genesis GV70 EV (launches next year) or Mach E as backups.

Mach E was a no go with my wife. She said looks too much like a truck out the front window. She was very happy with the look of the i4 as it's a normal looking "car" and approved the pre-order deposit.

FYI I have always had good luck with BMW's. None of them ever burned any oil, all well over 100K miles (leaking was a different story, our E39 540iT always wanted to leak something - replaced by the 340GT). My first BMW, (sold to another grateful family) 2000 328i 5-speed is still on the road with 250K miles, just got it's first clutch at around 230K miles.

The 335D had the usual emission system issues, all covered. Except what was handled by emission recalls/repairs and normal maintenance, still has all original parts, but I got guilty at 100K and changed the serpentine belt and coolant just because. Remember no spark plugs. Only out of warranty repair on that car (so far) was a glow plug module. Original suspension except I could not stand the way the factory shocks were valved and installed Bilstein B6's quite a while back.

My previous 2001 E39 530i I6 5MT is still driven by the 2nd owner@210k miles. He spent around $1.5k/10k miles on repairs + maintenance(including tires) at indies.

My 2013 F30 was sold a few months ago at inflated price , my bet is that the 2nd owner of that car likely will spend less than $1k/10k miles on that I4 turbo since it still has 6+ yrs of emission warranty.

Not if it's time for a new car. We have a 340GT with 35K miles, and the 335D with 120K miles. The D is much more fun to drive and would like to keep it over the GT, but that would just be stupid.

Other than the electric vs hydraulic steering, I expect the i4 to feel a lot like the 335D. They are similar in size, the diesel is a heavy car, and the torque of the diesel makes response feel somewhat like electric.

I am looking forward to technology that is more than a decade newer than the D (E90 was designed around 2003). More than once someone asked me why my back-up camera was broken. My answer: It's not broken, I do not have one.

Sadly, you won't get wireless charging. It's not being delivered on any BMWs.
