$5,000 to repair damaged ONE strut. Is this outrageous?
Dealer wants 5k to repair ONE strut in my ‘14 i8. They’re in negotiations with the 3rd party company that holds my extended warranty (paid $4k for extended warranty in 2017).
Will probably take the car to my personal mechanic. I think a strut and other connected parts is something he can handle, even if he’s never worked on an i8. Anyone think this is outrageous ? Last edited by orion1977; 12-05-2019 at 03:55 PM.. |

If it's a front strut, it requires them to use a laser and mirror to align parts back up to get it installed. I don't think it's absolutely necessary as RDDC swapped out springs by pulling the struts and reinstalled them without any special equipment. He only needed to take it in for an alignment.

Ultimately, BMW said my 3rd party warranty was “brutal,” but they both agreed that only $1500 worth of parts is needed to be replaced, and the warranty company covered all of it. I paid $100 deductible instead of $4700. What do you guys think of BMW trying to get $4700 when there was only $1500 worth of needed rapairs? Last edited by orion1977; 12-18-2019 at 09:34 PM.. |

Their name is Smart Autocare. Paid them $4k in ‘17 for a 72 mos warranty. They covered $1500 worth of strut repair. A seasoned BMW rep described them as “brutal,” but they did work out a deal. The rep says next time he knows what to say to them to expedite the process. Even he learned something new and he’s been with BMW for 20 years.
