Senate Dems propose suspending student loan payments amid coronavirus outbreak

Senate Dems propose suspending student loan payments amid coronavirus outbreak

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/sen...virus-outbreak

The plan would provide relief to federal student loan borrowers through an “immediate cancellation” of monthly student loan payments during the national emergency, and would “pay down a minimum of $10K for all federal student loan borrowers.”

The plan would require Congress to authorize the Department of Education to make monthly student loan payments on behalf of borrowers, and would “guarantee” the minimum of $10,000 payoff for all borrowers.

As all these purposal I don't like the government causing inflation, a law freezing it temporarily I'll be fine with but forgiveness, paying it off, or giving money I strongly dosagree with both for individual and public institutions.

We may need a jubilee before this is all over. I have no idea how that could work in this integrated economy.

So you're also against Trump's waiving of student loan interest, giving 14 days of paid sick leave, free coronavirus testing to everyone including the uninsured, and boosting unemployment state funds, as well as the planned $1 trillion stimulus? I think you are, but just wanted to make sure.

Pretty much, it will cause more problems long term then the pain we will experience short term.

If there's a debt jubilee, does that mean folks like me who paid back every cent of our loans over nearly 20 years (never missing a payment a single time), will be paid back in full including all the interest?

lol, this is all such bullshit.

Destroy an economy and peoples' livelihoods over some bullshit Chinese bioweapon that isn't even that effective.

This is bullshit but I'm torn. On one hand I have ZERO student loan debt and paid it all off. On the other the wife has $45,000 still left from her masters and doctoral program.

Sounds like a Pocahontas/Colonel Sanders wet dream.

This is serious though Nicky. One person an hour is dying in NYC. I have elderly parents that won't make it through this if they become infected.

Not surprised, Approx 30% of student loans already deferred.

Senate Dem's killed the bipartisan bill last night and today, but Pelosi sweeps in with a House bill of her own that's 1,100+ pages. Democrats seem to be holding the US economy hostage in order to further their agenda.

I'm curious how any of this is related to the Chinese Coronavirus pandemic and how they help the economy...
  • Postal Service bailout
  • Corporate board diversity quotas
  • Early voting
  • Same day voter registration
  • Collective bargaining
  • Requiring the airlines to fully offset their carbon emissions
  • Expansion of wind and solar credits
  • Union representation on corporate boards

*Edit: to clarify, these are just some of the proposals in Pelosi's bill.

Another talking point has been how the Senate bill was a GOP slush fund/bailout for businesses, which is thoroughly debunked as Pelosi uses the exact same language for oversight that the Senate bill had.

I have no problem with this. Irrespective of the virus cause - the economic disaster that is currently occurring is a direct cause of the government. I'm not saying it isn't warranted - but the reason is because the government is shutting down business.

As such, the government should also be providing an offset - eliminating all expenses to offset the forced elimination of all income - on a temporary basis, until the restrictions are lifted.

The Dems pork they are trying to add is ridiculous, but let us not pretend that the GOP is doing insane shit, too.

$500B to be handed out by Mnuchin - to corporations, not individuals - with virtually no oversight regarding who gets paid or what they use the money for?

Virtually no oversight. Who told you that phooey?
He clearly stated that it will have strict oversight from day one by bipartisan leaders.

But yeah, let's toss 35 million at the Arts while trying to heal a pandemic. You just can't make it up.

Uh, our President.

...Answering the question of who would provide accountability for the unrestricted distribution of half-a-trillion dollars, Trump’s response was even less promising: “I’ll be the oversight. I’ll be the oversight.”...

...the Troubled Asset Relief Program — the formal name of the 2008 financial services industry bailout — created a Financial Stability Oversight Board, a Congressional Oversight Panel, a special inspector general and a mandate for periodic review by the General Accountability Office, Congress’ accounting arm. The legislation offered by Senate Republicans includes none of that...

I agree with suspending payments and interest if you don't have a job or much less of a job than you used to but disagree with it applying to all and also dropping how much is owed by $10,000 across the board. If you have a salary job that still have you should continue to make payments as you always have. Once things get back to a reasonable state you should pay back the money you borrowed. I don't agree at all that the country as a whole should be stuck with student loans when everyone agrees the education the person received was a good investment in themselves.

I'm still working on my loans, so obviously the $10,000 would be nice to have. With that said I haven't been effected by any of this yet besides not being able to find TP. At this point I don't even feel like stating an opinion. Whatever they give me is fine or lack there of.
