I modified my BMW i8 exhaust at NO COST

Here's how I modified my BMW i8 valve in order to increase the stock exhaust noise, for FREE. This doesn't result in a trouble code or check engine light, and it is very easy to reverse this and put the car back to stock. Check it out!

More exhaust sounds, here:

This is really cool. I had thought to do something like this, but didn't want to take the wheelwell apart. Good mod and easy to back out of to boot!

Very cool but it appears to offer no discernible improvement to Sports mode, yes?

Sounds great, lovely piece of work Pat, do let us know if the system stays clean or if you get any errors popping up

Me2! And not only me... what impresses friends and family the most with my new Roadster is taking the roof down and “flying” off in total silence.

So far, no issues at all. No trouble codes. It sounds like Sport Mode when you apply throttle and when you're at very little throttle, it's quiet but not as quiet as it was before the flap closed. So, I'm happy with it and understand this mod is not for everyone. But for some of us, we're getting bored and want to hear more, just not Diesel-like noise from the aftermarket exhausts. It's easy to enable and put back.

If there is enough battery available to drive in reverse gear, the car will default to using the battery/electric motor. However, if you are low on battery, it may run the mid-engine and use that for reverse. Either way, you have to come out of Sport Mode to enable reverse gear.

Hi Pat

Thanks for the great idea to enhance our enjoyment of our i8s.

It got me thinking about the possibility of making your modification controllable (off and on) through a mobile phone.

Would you mind if I moved ahead to make a proof of concept? If that worked the next step would be to try to make a few samples and offer them to forum members at cost (I estimate less than US$30 each but until I get a working proof of concept, an rough idea of how many samples are required, etc I will not know).

To conclude, I am not interested in a commercial venture (there are better ways to make money :-) ); my interest is give back to forum members from whom I have benefited so many times during my i8 journey.

Hi Pat, So is it safe to say that that fuse ONLY controls the flap?

I enthusiastically support innovation. If there is a way to make this better, go for it. I'd be happy to see it!

That's correct. According to the wiring diagram I showed in the video, that fuse only controls this exhaust flap.

Genius in its simplicity!

Not for me though, as there are many times when I want the car to be quiet.

More exhaust sounds, here:

Pat: Could you show us (for those interested like me) how to disable all exhaust sound from speaker and limit the noise as much as possible from the real exhaust.

So the car sound like it runs in stealth mode (e drive) all the time?

Yes please! No more fake noise. Is there a fuse we can pull to keep the speakers from piping in the exhaust sound?

and me too! - I would love a mod where the petrol engine is as silent as possible! ( and i dont mean Only running it in eDrive lol ).

So many companies work to make exhausts sound loud and " sporty " ( what sport are they playing? lol ) but Id be the 1st in line to buy from a company that says - we will make your exhaust silent!
