Aaah I miss the good ol days... when M track days were free, and the M cars weren't ugly AF.
Yeah. I agree. I have been numerous times. Both free and paid. It's not worth $500 bucks to me either.

If you are just making the trip for the M track day (specifically the 1/2 day) I would recommend trying to figure out a way to get your car here for an HPDE instead - if the logistics are feasible. A lot more track time & you will actually be able to drive how you want to + have an instructor in car (if you are already not approved solo). There are also arrive & drive options available.

Now if the M track day is just a part of the trip then it is an entertaining day & Austin in an awesome town.

Also - COTA in July can be a bit rough. They will have the windows up & ACs cranking so won't be bad in the cars but don't expect a whole lot of power out of the cars.

Yup, the surface at COTA is soooo much better now. They did a great job with the resurfacing.

Always worth it to thrash around in other peoples cars.

I've been to 2 M Track Days. $495 is not worth it anymore. I can get a full day on a track for half that price for a HPDE, way more seat time, and not paced in a lead-follow. For those who have never been on a track, it's still steep, but at least there is a hint of instruction. That money is better spend on M School though.

I'm doing 8 or 9 competition weekends this year. The M trackday is just for fun.

As far as the M school, I'm wondering how much value an "advanced" driver would get out of it. I've been looking at other ones like the Skip Barber school and Porsche's Masters courses.

Not much if you are advanced. I'd do a focused school like you mentioned. Advanced M School I hear is good, but that't a lot of $.

Well it is, its just about if you are willing to pay it. Like personal to you if it is worth it to you.

Because $500 doesn't cover a intermediately skilled driver in track maintenance if it was their car. Tires $1000+, pads, fluids, etc. and not to mention danger on a daily driver etc.

$500 is a bargain to play around in M cars for 4 hours. Now I will note, you only really go 7/10ths max.

But I will admit, like anything that costs money. If it was once free and now you pay $200 then $500. You always remember when it was free. If it started at $500 years ago, we wouldn't really be complaining about cost.

I wonder if they'd be willing to waive the prerequisites with enough credentials. I'm surprised Porsche does, I spoke to them yesterday.

I remember reading the prerequisites were 1 or 2 day M School or HPDE/track experience.

I hear you. My feelings about the cost come from a place of "been there, done that" and, to me, I don't see it being worth $500 bucks since I have done M track days so many times in the past. I might feel differently when they have a bunch of new M cars that I have not driven. I have driven/tracked every M product available now except the M8....

If they at least let us go 9/10ths it would be much more attractive.

I've been looking for a way to get on the road course at Indy since I moved out here. This is perfect! Can't wait.

If you've been to even a single natural terrain road course, prepare to be underwhelmed, but the "I've crossed the bricks in anger" box-checking is worth it. And I'm sure being smack in a major metro will help the show be a lot better than it would be at VIR or the like

In the SCCA configuration it was flat as a pancake, you use basically zero of the banking and there are no "no guts no glory" corners, it's all medium speed to low speed cornering and the faster corners are corners you have to give it up to have a good entry into the next corner, rather than any places you can send it. Fun to race other cars on because there are lots of places to try something, but it's one of those tracks that races well but if you're all by yourself gets pretty yawntastic after a few dozen laps.

Any day at any racetrack is better than a day at the office though

Monticello has their own open-to-the-public driving school experiences using various MMC BMWs (m240 or M2). It costs a little more than m track day, but I'm guessing you actually learn something.
