i3 is slow. BMW already released acceleration times. Endless list of cars that will smoke the i3.

Amazing that a basic laugh of a video showing a bit of i3 electric torque generates 5 pages of debate and sometimes defensiveness.

I would like to see how the new 335d, D3 and B3 (and yes the tesla) compare to the i cars and the e92 for a laugh.

Not sure the forums could handle the debate though!

But the point is the torque doesn't do anything for the i3, it is slow. It can't keep up with a Honda Accord.

I can not believe the comments on this thread.

This video is not about the M3. It's about changing perceptions of the ugly i3 and BMW electric cars.

Before you watched the video how many of you would have thought the i3 could take the M3 off the line? I would have thought no way. So mission successful, my views on this electric car have changed. It's still ugly though.

I'd love to get an i3. I'd be making M3 owners cry at stoplights all day long. 0-30 sprint and then cruise and watch them fly by until we get to the next light. Rinse and repeat.

It's no different than when I happen to line up next to a 328xi at a stop light on a rainy day. I know he's going to kick my ass to the next light.

Shape of the torque curve, gearing, and actual performance figures don't mean anything.

When we get an M3/M4 with a higher stated peak torque, all the magazine racers will finally be happy.
My badd. You are right. That's why everybody buys 335's because it comes with 300 lb ft and ours comes with 295.

The e9X M3's were absolute failures in the mind of BMW which is why the new M3/M4 will get the n55 (335) motor.

Ahhhh...the beautiful thrum of the S65. Oh how I miss my 2011 E92 M3

Now I'm reminded why I walked away from the 435xi test drive impressed by it's refinement and thinking I'd be bored to tears one month into owning one...

This is why there is debate. The i3 CAN'T take the M3 off the line but people watch this video and think "wow the i3 is faster than an M3 to 60? That's amazing!" It might be faster for 1.5 seconds but that's not exactly winning "off the line." The M3 loses traction because it's fast and has over 100 ftlbs more torque than the i3. Instant or not for the i3, it doesn't take long for the M to hit 3k rpm (and virtually instant with 6mt or dct launch) and have a long flat torque curve to 7k rpms.

The i3 is fine and for a niche buyer, but what is the point of this video?

The M3 was not able to get traction, the i3 will launch that way every time. It's just a car forum some of you people need to chill out.

You have to remember the beauty of the i3 is in it's efficiency. THAT is the whole purpose of its existence. We are talking about a car that is probably going to be rated at 120MPGe. This is twice as efficient as a Prius, AND much quicker. It holds about 2/3 gallon of fuel equivalent, and yet can go close to 100 miles on that same amount of energy. 1 gal gas=approx. 33kwh. I3 battery = approx. 22kwh.

We are talking about a car that gets better fuel efficiency than any motorcycle, and just about any scooter or moped. That's the perspective you need to look at to realize how revolutionary these cars are. To put things into context, you take 4 people on a 50mile trip in this thing for the same amount of energy it takes to run your Central air conditioner for about 2hrs.

And don't forget the Porsche 918 was berated for all its unnecessary batteries, and motors, etc. Then it promptly went out and shattered the Nuburgring lap record for a production car.

Electric cars are absolutely effortless on the launch. And though they may be faster, it almost makes you laugh hearing how hard a petrol engine car has to try to keep up. A 4800Lb Tesla Sedan will beat almost any stock M3 0-60mph and through the qtr mile. I believe the EPA rating is about 85MPGe on that same Tesla. Again, better than a Prius by a wide margin.

First observation, the i3 had a small jump on the M3, which is sufficient to put it ahead at the start.

Second, as so many other have said, the M3 did not have traction. More torque would not have helped without more traction...

The big question though, how come the i3 has so much better traction off the line?
The traction question would seem to be easy...it's those narrow tires and wheels everyone interested in performance hate...they slice to the pavement much better, and allow all of the traction and torque it has to be applied when conditions are less than ideal. Purpose built for good traction in lousy weather, low rolling resistance, and optimizing electric range.

As to someone else that said, 'But, it would probably make a good city car'...well, people that's exactly what it was designed for...not thrill rides in the country, or bombing up that canyon road, but getting around a city, with it's typically lower speed limits, high congestion, stop and go, lousy parking opportunities...it's a small car, designed to get around without the hit of a gas guzzler that just adds pollutants to the air when things get dicey in a city sitting at a light. We know the M drivers, if it offered it, would turn off start stop.

The I-series is designed for a specific purpose, if you don't happen to prize that, or feel it's a worthwhile implementation of it, feel free to continue to drive what you drive, but please, widen your horizons to realize not everyone thinks like you do, or has your needs or wants.

Hard to say if the trend will continue, but where the i3 is available, it's selling MUCH faster than BMW thought, so all of you nay-sayers must be missing something. The i3 is NOT designed as a general purpose vehicle...it's optimized for use in and around a city environment. If you can't see that, I'm sorry. Comparing it to general purpose, or specialized, high performance vehicles is like the proverbial apples to oranges comparison...they are quite different. There are good reasons why you might use a ball peen hammer verses a big sledge...their intended uses are quite different.

I was just about to say; everyone forgets that skinny tires make for incredible grip in the damp conditions (I know it was not raining in the vid, but the road did look - uh --- moist).

Just go do a skidpan gymkhana; Ive even seen city cars trashing serious machinery simply because the tires virtually ignored the water. Now the i3 has fairly low profile (so less wheel hop than traditional high profile tires) + skinny rubber and full power available off the line.

Fact is, on this day, in these circumstances, the i3 got a little way up the road a little faster, then, predictable lost heavily to the M3.

Not sure why the butt-hurt, excuse making and trash-talking, I don't think anyone is suggesting that the i3 is a superior performance machine.

It does show the potential of light weight electric vehicles... even thos with skinny tyres.
