How to keep the car running when not sitting inside?

For example, I pull up to the store to grab something, have a friend waiting in the passenger seat, its hot outside so I don't shut down the car before I get out, but the car always shuts off and turns off a/c and everything, the second I get it. I asked the tech at bmw about it and he gave me some long explanation about it needing to do that for safety reasons, it being a hybrid with push start. But his explanation didn't make sense to me, considering I've had hybrid push starts before that didn't have to do that.
Does everybody else's i8 do the same? It's really frustrating when even if I leave my key in the car, it shuts it off.

Just bump the throttle right before you open the door

I think if you floor the throttle in Neutral it will fire up the gas engine. A better alternative if you're worried about climate only is to engage pre-conditioning, it should keep the car at the right temp for a while.

Won't pressing the park button but not touching stop/start leave everything running and you can get out?

There's a setting to keep your air conditioning on while you shop, just before you turn the vehicle off, after you've depressed the on-off button. Click on it and you're fine. Then open the door and exit. Solution.

Just exit as normal, then select pre-conditioning using DisplayKey for instant aircon or heating on. Easy

If you have no DisplayKey, use the phone app, but there could be a delay.

Remember, the climate control is electric - doesn't need the gas engine running!

If I put my car in park and open the door, the car cuts off the engine, as though I had hit the start/stop button. UK cars may be different of course.

If I want the engine to continue running I blip the throttle as I'm opening the door, everything stays on.
