possible i8 purchase
Hey Guys
i have a question that the dealership doesnt even want to answer so heres hoping i get some true answers here. I have also wanted to buy an i8 and am now in the postion to be able to purchase a older model. my problem is that they say the battery has a 8 year warranty plan and if i buy a 2015 that is 7 years into the warranty. Also what would this mean for resell value as i dont think it is possible to buy longer warranty for the battery after 8 years. Also what is the averge cost for 3to 4 years warranty. What is the likelyhood of any battery problems as i have seen 15k quotes to replace them and how reliable are they and should this put me off purchasing my dream car. Cheers |

Here is what you can do to get a idea of the condition of the traction battery of the i8 your considering purchasing.
Add up the last 5 digits of the VIN number. Press and hold the trip meter button for 10 seconds. A menu will appear. Select UNLOCK Press the button the number of times that your total equaled from adding the last 5 digits of the VIN to unlock the service menu. Read BATT KAPPA.MAX The max capacity of the pre LCI i8 battery is 7.1 kWh but only has a useable capacity of 5.2 kWh as a protection feature so that the battery is never fully charged to extend the life of the battery. Just like the battery is never fully discharged. If your result reading is close to 5.2 kWh and can even be a little more than 5.2 then your battery is still in good shape and will likely last many more years. When your done press and hold to exit the service menu. Extended warranties are usually not worth the expense in my opinion. Last edited by Coastali8; 11-04-2022 at 09:13 PM.. |

Thanks Coastali8, worked like a charm.
2014 Pure Impulse car with 16,000 miles, always garaged in the winter connected to the 110V outlet during Chicago winters, showing full 5.2 kwh capacity. I also had the dealer do a battery test one year ago. Hopefully this is a strong indication of the battery longevity, given the 7 year battery warranty is expiring this month. |

For those wanting to know how the i8 battery warranty is... besides silly issues like refusing to test the car until i purchased a NEW 12v battery. And the batteries themselves being horribly back ordered... the battery safety module either fried and killed the batteries or the batteries had a serious fault that fried the module. All was replaced including wiring harnesses and charge system as well. So if the batteries fail in warranty at least they do good to swap them all out and ensure associated components damaged by the failure are replaced. Ymmv
