My 2020 i8 is coming off lease soon.

Debating getting into a gently used 2020 i8, or maybe even 2019 i8 with low miles, vs buying out my current lease.

Pros of taking over mine is that I know that I have taken excellent care of this car, with no issues my car.
Pros of getting into a new i8 would be lower miles, for the same price, maybe even cheaper.

Thoughts?

LOL…the same dilemma for me.
Mine is 2019 roadster, 12k miles and residual is $99k
I see similar cars on AutoTrader a little cheaper ($5k to 10k) but they are not my car…and I like my color scheme too.
So I’m like 80% into buying mine; I will extend the lease 2 months to think a little anyway.

I agree, my car is my car. I know it pretty well, and I ordered what I wanted....color specs, rims etc.

The clincher is the miles. I've got 37K on mine. I see cars with 5-10K miles selling for less than my residual.

37K vs 5K I think is pretty significant?

So, that's kind of what has me debating the i8 i don't know, vs mine...the one i do know!

One thing I have to say about my 2016. Had barely 18k miles when I bought it. But I think the batteries wear more sitting not charged up vs the car being driven. Lack of use can hide issues that a bit of driving would have uncovered. If your car has been problem free, And you maintained it well. I would recommend it 100% over an unknown. So many i8 had poorly repaired unreported damaged. When I was searching for mine. I looked at 8 total. And still had an issue with engine mount failure and just got it back from a battery replacement under warranty. The engine mount failure also caused the transmission housing to crack. So I'll be keeping mine now because all the issues should be sorted out now. I love this car.

Edit: yes brand new transmission In it as well.

The key to battery longevity is to follow the instructions for long term storage. I have a 2014 and bought it new, it sits in the winter connected to the 110V charger. When you buy a used one, there is a procedure to check battery capacity in the instrument cluster. If you buy from a dealer ask them for a battery health check.

It is a BMW. My first three BMWs all went 200k+ miles with no major repairs. This one, however, managed a coolant leak (I suspect a tyro tech filled coolant level not knowing he needed to do so under vacuum...), resulting in BMW putting a brand new engine and coolant system in at their expense. This may be a lifetime car for me, I have not seen anything I would trade it for.

My way of suggesting you not fear a mere 40k miles on yours. It is hardly broken in.

Wow, sorry to hear about the engine/coolant issue you had, but that's awesome that it BMW took care of it!

I feel the same way most of the time with the idea of 35K miles really being such a small amount of usage.

So far it seems pretty clear the general consensus is that the bird in the hand is worth more than the two in the bush!

The other lower mileage car i'm considering is also not the color scheme I want, with rims I'm totally not a fan of.

So now, y'all have swayed my decision to keeping my car! Let's see if there are any other opinions, or any other cars that pop up in the market.
