Poll: So my PS3 broke yesterday...

How many people have had problems with the PS3? I have the YLOD (Yellow light of death) and it's so hard to find information on the net since noobs are arguing in forums about what the cause/solution might be.

It looks like an overheating problem most likely and I am getting it fixed quite cheap today. I'm not sure if I should buy an external fan because there are mixed reviews on the net. Anyway...

More info I just found with a quick video showing how repairs are done:

My PS3 has been fine for the last few years. Granted I don't use it all too much.

Got mine a year ago. So far no problems. I hardly touch it though.

Have a PS2 since launch and no problems there either.

Mine is near new but haven't had a problem. Played a couple long consecutive hours on it. Forgot I paused Madden the other day cause I turned the TV off, the console ran for nearly a day and a half and no issues. I also watch movies on it using the Netflix disk and nothing again.

First impressions is that this console is initially made soo much better then my xbox360 was. The xbox is sooo freaking loud, to the point I don't want to play it. I can barely hear that the PS3 on.

Overall, I prefer PS3 for quality and the fact I love the controller more lol. However, today alone I've found out a lot more about the quality of the ps3. Aparantly the new COD Modern Warfare 2 is using a lot more resources and leads to overheating problems etc.

Some people say its not true because the PS3 will auto shutdown in event of high temperature, however, even Sony knew I was running that game and it led to the problem. Speaking to a lot of people that do repairs it's turning out that these repairs are needed 99% of the time by COD Modern Warfare 2 gamers.

Advice is do not play for long periods of time, make sure PS3 is ventilated, maybe purchase an external (good quality) fan that will help cool the PS3 and dont leave the PS3 with game running on for periods of time.

I've had mine for about 3 years now and the Blu-Ray laser went out last year and I had to replace it myself (It was $75 and an hours work vs. $150 for Sony to do it in 3-6 weeks). It was kind of a pain, but I got it done and it works fine now.

I'm not sure if the blu-ray laser crapping out is the YLOD or not. Mine went bad after 13 months of ownership. I tried to find the parts online but all the complete drive units I could find were being snapped up by repair shops. After searching the internet for a few days and not finding the right drive for my ps3 i gave up and just sent my PS3 to one of the repair shops and paid $120 to have it fixed, shipping included.

There were a couple of times I left the thing running for long periods of time. Not being able to charge the controllers unless the unit is on is a huge design flaw imo. On more that one occasion I would turn it on to charge the controller, forget about it, then realize it's still on 8-12 hours later. I'm sure that had a lot to do with it dieing, but I was still a little pissed it broke one month out of warranty.

I think you can charge the controllers using a computer, right ?

My girlfriend bought me one for my birthday last year. I don't play it THAT much and it's had zero problems (other than when Tekken 6 installed an update it wouldn't restart on its own after the update).

I don't play it all that much, but I have played games to completion: Batman Arkham Asylum, Resident Evil 5, Tekken 6 and most of Street Fighter IV (can't do some of the harder Challenges). That's all the games I own for PS3, except my sister plays Battlefield Bad Company with her boyfriend and friends online (I can't play first person shooters with thumb sticks worth crap).

My original 80G crapped out before Thanksgiving. It would sometimes boot to the home screen, but no vid playback at all. Sound was fine.

I ended up just getting the new one instead of worrying about shipping it to Cali to repair.

I tried this on my desktop and it didn't seem to work, although it's an old desktop from when USB ports were brand new. I just plugged it into my laptop and it looks like it's charging. Oh well, I guess that's the one thing I'm going to learn today. Thanks!

There's a dual charge unit you can get gamestop or bestbuy. Don't remember how much I paid, but it's pretty useful if you're one of those people that never likes to play sitting close to the tv.

Sorry about your troubles. I've had my ps3 since launch, play it pretty heavily, and never had any problems outside of nba2k10 freezing a lot (I fixed it by deleting what must've been a corrupted game save)

Got my 60GB on launch day (didn't wait in line for hours like most either).

It's been left running for months at a time, dropped off a 6 foot shelf bounced off the dresser on its way down. It still runs like a trooper too

You've left your console on for month(s) at a time?!! I cringe if I accidentally leave it on for an hour in my dorm. Then again I have a 360 which is more prone to F*** up with or without negligence.
