i4 e40 battery

Why does the first charge of the e40 (at 80%) shows only 200 miles?

It should be simple math isnt it? 301x80%= approx. 240 miles.

no it's not as simple as that. the GOM (guess o meter) is not based on such a simple formula. It uses the past driving history, plus any additional recent data to come up with the range number shown on your instrument cluster.

I've had 80% show as little as 189miles after driving the car through the canyons and had some fun. When I'm on a roadtrip, doing steady 70mph and I stop to fill up, at 80% it shows 260miles. Then last month when I drove up from LA there was some high winds for most of the way and at 80% it showed 212miles. So 200miles doesn't mean it's wrong or right for that matter. It's just showing what you might do if you drive the same way as you previously did and it will adjust if you drive differently.

The guess o meter is just as bad on a petrol car. While on track, I get about 6 mpg. It tells me on the way home that I have about 120 miles of range with a nearly 20 gallon tank.

But the ONE thing that ALWAYS seems consistent with it, on both gas and electric BMW's, is that if your target is within that number, driven conservatively, YOU are going to make it. It seems to be a "worst case scenario" most of the time. Glad for that a few times here and there.

In the wintertime, perhaps half of the advertised range.
It depends on so many things. Temperature perhaps the biggest one.
Driving habits as well but I can't see how I can cut the range in half by inspired driving unless on a track.

Well one way is to drive 70mph into a 20+ mph head wind... That wasn't fun, I got 1.6mi/kwh for about 100miles arrived at charging station with 5% only because I reduced my speed to 55mph for the last 20miles.

It's comical to see the estimated range go up while driving, it's like going backwards in time to go forward to get to your destination
