It was amazing that this car was made at all. Sure, it was never going to replace the 3 series or X3 as BMW's bread and butter, but it's a $100k+ hybrid. I'm surprised it survived as long as it has!
The problem is, not everyone wants an electric vehicle. I get your point but for very personal reasons -that I will not go into- I will never buy an electric vehicle. Never been interested in one and never will.

It's actually a decent value if you know how to get one for the right price. No, I'm not talking about used, but leases with a hefty discount and the right knowledge of how to work the lease.
Leasing one is perfectly fine, but beyond that it's just stupid IMO.

BMW is putting the i8 out to pasture in April

Quote:
BMW announced it will end production of the i8, which is available as a coupe and as a roadster, after a six-year production run. The model had a formative influence on current and future members of the company's range.

The i8 started life as a wildly futuristic gasoline-electric concept introduced at the 2011 edition of the Frankfurt auto show. At the time, Autoblog described it as "a hybrid enthusiasts can get behind." BMW hinted the design study could make the leap from the show floor to the showroom floor, so the production model didn't exactly take the world by surprise, but we were shocked at how little it had changed since its debut. It retained the concept's lines, though it gained full doors, and it arrived with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain built around a three-cylinder engine.

Production started in 2014, and the i8 has proudly stood at the top of the BMW lineup since — in image and technology, not in price. Lessons learned from fine-tuning its gasoline-electric drivetrain helped engineers develop more volume-oriented hybrid models, and some of its other features — like the laser headlights — trickled down to the rest of the range. BMW launched a convertible variant of the i8 aptly named Roadster in late 2017.

While not a high-volume model, and certainly not designed as one, the i8 stands out as one of BMW's best-selling standalone sports cars. The company built the 20,000th example in December 2019. For context, it made 399 street-legal units of the M1 between 1978 and 1981, and it sold approximately 5,700 Z8s from 2000 to 2003.

BMW's Leipzig, Germany, factory began making the final evolution of the i8, a limited-edition model named Ultimate Sophisto, in 2019. Production is scheduled to end in April 2020. Autoblog learned from a company spokesperson that the final car off the line will be delivered to a customer, just like a standard i8.

As of writing, there's no indication the i8 will get a direct successor. One of BMW i's next models is a 3 Series-sized electric sedan previewed by the 2020 i4 concept. Looking further ahead, members of the company's top brass have strongly hinted the 600-horsepower Vision M Next introduced in 2019 will spawn a production car sooner or later. It will be much quicker than the i8, and it will offer more than twice times its electric range.

One of my neighbors has the roadster it still looks great. The i8 never aged a day.

The problem was the powertrain and price. They should have gone full EV or full gas. Either make something as revolutionary as Tesla or give us a proper sports car. Instead they got too cute and it bit them in the end.

i'm sure it drives ok, its just not a $100k+ car. i haven't driven one, but i've sat in one and had a chance to explore it. the stats aren't anything to brag about, its mediocre for a $100k car. doesn't quite do anything excellent- mileage, performance, or otherwise. styling is subjective, and the i8 isn't going to win many beauty pageants.
i really feel like the market segment is a bit awkward and lukewarm.

i've only seen one at the track so far, and it was mediocre there as well. we were about the same in acceleration, but the i8 was seriously lacking in the corners due to the skinny tires. it was obvious the car wasn't cornering well and understeering like crazy.

It's sort of a symbol of what BMW became during the 2010s decade: a brand that tried to be the jack of all trades but master of none. I mean look at nearly all of their F-chassis vehicles; were any of them truly exceptional in any way? BMW used to be focused on providing customers an exceptional driving experience but that went out the window with trying to be everything to everyone. The i8 was a prime example of that. Things are better now but but by much. You can't drive the new 3-series and tell me it's truly focused on being a driver's car, and reviews agree.

Doesn't mean much but seems strange since they went through all the development of the roadster only to stop production after it hasn't even been out for a year.

The dinosaurs didn't get that "driver's car" isn't enough anymore. Cars are required to support fleet emission numbers, safety for less and less experienced drivers as driving becomes less important in the current generations, etc., etc. In this over determined system of requirement, every single dimension will always feel not completely optimized. Once you build a "driver's car" you needed to violate safety, price, emissions, ... Haters typically didn't get that they missed how the world got more complex and their intellect didn't keep up.

No criticism from this i8 owner unfortunately ;-)

I'm very grateful BMW decided to develop the car exactly as is! And by not putting a 4, 6 or v8 in it.
Those people comparing it to an overweight Tesla/Taycan are missing the point completely too.

The CFRP/aluminum construction, looks, easy-to-drive, usability, top build quality, low cost (used car, insurance, road tax and maintenance) make it THE car for me.

Again, great value for money (used) and future potential :-)

“Revolutionary “??
Electric golf carts have been around for many years.

A carbon fiber hybrid like the Porsche 918, Ferrari SF 90, or the Koenigsegg Regera at a price you can afford. That’s revolutionary.

Haven’t seen any Teslas on the race track either.

You're right, it might not excel at everything you listed (mileage, performance, etc), but it does provide a great combination of all that. A car that performs/accelerates as well as an e92 and even F80 M3, yet provides 2-3 times better mileage. Instead of being based off a normal 3 series chassis, it also has it's own mid-engine, CFRP chassis. While looks are subjective, I can guarantee you most people would consider the i8 a great looking vehicle and not confuse it as a souped up base model car. I own a 2017 NSX and the i8 garners just as many thumbs up and looks as the NSX does. (Not my type of thing as I prefer to fly under the radar while driving.). The i8 is BMW's "affordable" Porsche 918, McLaren P1, Ferrari SF90, introduced back in 2013/2014. Many >$100k cars are also a hard sell, simply due to price and market. The Audi R8, Merc GT, McLaren 570s, Acura NSX, and even the Lambos can be had with deep discounts. If you're only looking for $/performance, almost everything over 100k is arguably "unjustifiable".

Very much agree with your assessment. I've been a long time BMW owner starting back in the days with an e36M3. But times are changing and technology is evolving. The days of ICE cars are numbered. There isn't much of a market for cars that only focus on driving (manuals, hydraulic steering, etc), NA engine with a great exhaust, etc. Now the mass market wants cars that perform just as well, if not better, than those cars while providing much better mileage/efficiency, latest/greatest tech, safety, etc. BMW would be out of business if it still tried to sell e30s/e36s in today's market. Actually, they probably couldn't even if they wanted due to all the present day mandates. And it isn't just BMW doing this. Every manufacturer is...Porsche, McLaren, Ferrari, etc. They all have hybrids and electric cars, and all of those cars, compared to their predecessors, can be considered less of a driver's car.
