Appliance failure month at our house

First a Tupperware lid fell onto the heating coil in our dishwasher and melted, rendering the heat option useless until I can figure out how to scrape it off or replace the coil. Then our washing machine died and the dryer belt started to squeal. And today one of the two coil springs for our garage door broke. All this month. WTF? Is August Failure Month?

I feel your pain. The very day I had the HVAC salesman out for an estimate for the FUTURE replacement of my 20 year old system it dies. It was a 95 degree day. It cost me $130 for an emergency repair that night. I signed a contract that day for the replacement. Its now a few weeks later an everything has been replaced and Im out $9500. I can't wait for 2020 to be over.

Yes, it must be. I found a roof leak today. Heard what sounded like slow dripping water after a major storm but couldn’t figure out location. Went up to the attic and think I see the problem. I think I heard water dripping onto ductwork.

Household shit is such a scam with respect to planned obsolescence. I’m in one of those planned developments where all the homes were built at the same time by the same builder. We have the exact same failures at the same time as a group. A/C, dishwasher, refrigerators, main water pipes. It’s a running joke.

We’re thinking that the roofs will all be the next to go. Heads up roofing companies of Florida!

Our home / roof is 22 years old. Trying to wait as long as possible to avoid doing it again or having an old roof when we sell down the road as we plan to remain here long-term. But I’ve seen quite a few new roofs going on over the past few years in the neighborhood so I know it’s within the next 5 years. (Houses here were not all built at the same time but not decades apart either.) i assume you also have a tile roof, and these things are very expensive. My neighbor told me he is working with an independent adjuster who told him he could get a free roof due to previous storm damage but sounds like a scam to me.

The key is to not report small single damage that isn't structural and isn't leaking. When I was still a claim rep you had to have X number of hits per square (100 sq ft), although I don't remember that number.

Then when a huge storm comes through and really does some damage, then you make the claim.

There is no proof for the insurance that the cumulative damage didn't all occur in the one storm.

Interesting. We haven’t put a claim in since 2013, which got us dropped By insurance company. So we’ve been paying for minor repairs as they arise. Thing is, there hasn’t really been a major storm in a while. Irma in 2017.

The roofing companies swept through here after a hailstorm we had in May. It didn't actually hit our neighborhood, but they showed up ay my house anyway and claimed they could see damage from the ground already and that they could get us a "free" re-roof due to the hail damage. There are at least 20 houses between here and my office getting new roofs. Some of them were in the hail storm area, but I have to believe a lot of them were just cumulative damage cases.

I figured an insurance claim would result in higher premiums, as they always do with car insurance. And our insurance is bundled, car/homeowner.

Agreed. Try buying a flat screen TV that isn't "smart" or doesn't have a built-in microphone.

And everything is Alexa/Siri/Google ready. I don't need any of that crap.

Yes, tile roof like 90% of South Florida. I hope i have a few years to go on mine, wondering if i should save up my money, wait for solar tech (and installer experience) to mature more, and just go in that direction. Solar roofs are crazy expensive but not THAT much more IMO than a full tile roof - at least in my justification

Solar tiles? Do they exist for residential roofs yet? I heard about them a while back but haven’t kept up. I wonder what they cost.

Thankfully all of the appliances you listed are on the cheaper side compared to water heaters, air conditioners, and even oven/fridge!

My brother was born in August so.... perhaps it is

Just depends, most places won't drop you for one single claim. Just ensure your coverage is RCV and not the depreciated amount.

Yeah, the "free" part is they inflate the price high enough that you don't have to worry about the insurance company withholding the deductible.

As for the car insurance, at least with State Farm, the first one is free. If you have another claim in that 3 year period, then it rises and sometimes dramatically.

Another thing with the housing stuff, I don't know if it's still the same, but I would work with the companies preferred contractors or whatever. Work tends to get done faster and at a higher quality (insurance company isn't paying them until is work done) and at State Farm they offered a nice warranty on the work if you used their contractor as well.

And you don't have to worry about coordinating payments, or any of that stuff.

Heat gun and putty knife on the coil.

Also, make sure you service your garage door at least once a year. Recently discovered this myself when getting a new opener. Most homeowners, such as myself, never even consider it.

Mark,

Would it be too insensitive to bring the cats into this conversation given your earlier post about them?

Appliance repair guy shows up and I went to show him how the washing machine was stone dead and wouldn't do anything. So of course it fires right up and runs fine. I was like, WTF?

Now I know how people feel when they have a computer problem and it works fine for me.

Did you reboot the washer? Check that it is plugged in?
