Buying an EX3400 or Extreme (any model) for 2 paths to a SAN seems like way overkill. The Netgear has a full 16@10G, although only single ps. That's why I buy 2 of them? |

Netgear has always impressed me with good value for the money. I've used a lot of ProSafe stuff in my home network. I currently have a couple of Netgear switches on my network (have retired a bunch of other ones). I have a M4300 8X8F switch in my office providing 10Gig to my desktop. Totally impressed with this switch with the feature set where it even supports BGP routing. You might want to consider picking up a Dell PowerConnect 8024 as they're probably really cheap on Fleabay now. It's based on a Broadcom chipset and has dual power supplies. |

I just can't see the need for $10K in Extreme switches, nor even $7K for Juniper that will only give me 4@10G. Our current system runs all off a single Dell R6xx, all internal storage, using Hyper-V. I have no experience with VM nor SAN, so I'm struggling to understand why I need to spend more on switches than the servers we're buying. I think it's EXTREME overkill to even use a SAN, although with the idea of HA, I can see some justification. With at most 4 officers in the field at a time, 1G should be fine, in my uninformed opinion. Appreciate the free advice |

Oh and I didn't know this is for work. Yes, you want some redundancy built into the infrastructure. I'd still consider Netgear for any SMB type environment. As you're probably aware, one of the key things with purchasing business grade IT equipment is the support. Not sure if Netgear offers the same robust support options an Extreme or Juniper would provide. But heck with the cost savings, you could just buy a spare Netgear switch to have on the shelf and throw it in if one of the switches fail. Another thing about this level of switches, you're going to be in for a fairly steep learning curve. I've never touched an Extreme switch so I can't say if the command line is a pain to navigate or if there is a GUI. I do have experience with Juniper switches and firewalls. You're in for a very steep learning curve with JUNOS. I grew up with networking on Cisco IOS. JUNOS and IOS couldn't be further apart. Also Juniper switches are literally servers with lots of NIC ports. There is a file system in it on non volatile storage. They claim you can pull power to the switch without issues but they don't recommend you do it all the time. To properly power down a Juniper device, you have to issue a shutdown command to ensure the file system doesn't get corrupted. No worries. Just realize the quality of the advice I am giving is what you're paying for it...free. LOL. |

I'd like to re-think my last post on here. Not for me. I worked for at&t and was a fiber tech. I love technology, but hate the ways in which it is being used. I'd love to have automated/voice automated stuff in my home, but I also don't want anyone with a computer to be able to paint any more of a picture of my life than what they already have from my cell phone usuage.

^Scary shit, once you look into it, isn't it. A down right voluntary infiltration of people's privacy that they're even paying for, and not only on the front end.
