Prayers for everyone in southern Texas, my family lost absolutely everything in the Wildfire of 2016 in northern Alberta, Canada so I know firsthand how devastating this is going to be for a lot of people there, a lot of rough days and months ahead, unfortunately. Stay strong and safe, material things can be replaced but family and loved ones can't. Don't mess with Texas!

Most people in Austin, except those in the 100 year flood plane, don't .... I don't.

2008 tropical storm Fay came across central Fl..never made hurricane status. Took 4 days to cross the state.... I had $15k damage due to flooding.

I have USAA hurricane and flood insurance for my home. I do NOT live in a flood zone and it cost $250/ yr for a separate flood insurance policy in addition to my hurricane policy.

USAA said because Fay never became a hurricane.... my hurricane policy did not cover it... but my separate flood insurance policy did!

Your hurricane policy is separate from homeowners?

I also have flood insurance (also outside flood zone) and it is better to have than not have but it maxes out at less than full homeowners insurance. Even with flood insurance, we'd lose a lot if there was devastation like that flooding occurring. There seem to be many houses and content that are total losses.

Sorry.... hurricane is part of my home owners policy ... but when I first bought my home in 2006.... I opted in for additional flood insurance.

Need to read you policy but usually not separate from homeowners but "named storms" will have much higher deductibles than other weather events.

As for flood, I can tell you USAA (my insurer) and everyone else will push EVERYTHING they can onto the flood policy as that is paid by the federal government. As I noted very early in the thread, insurance companies (USAA included!) do not have your best interest at heart. They will try every way possible to minimize claim payments.

You can buy additional/excess flood cover above and beyond the $250k structure/$100k content that the federal food program covers. Ask me how I know! : )

I believe flood is supposed to cover damage from rising water. Homeowners is supposed to cover everything else, including water damage from a roof blowing away. There are definitely storms where it can be a gray area because damage come from all over. From initial reports I would expect much of the damage in Houston to be flood-related rather than homeowners, which is a shame for the people there.

In FL windstorm deductible are usually 2% but can be as much as 10%. Yes, you can buy excess flood coverage from a private company but I suspect very, very few do so. (I do not but I would if I lived closer to the coast or another body of water like a river.) Unfortunately, many don't even have a basic flood insurance policy.
