I chose the edrive 40 due to range and a review mentioning they like it better in terms of handling. I am coming from an m3SR+ and m3LR (no accelerates boost), and the extra speed is fun, its not game changing. The range however is, esp with relying on EA chargers instead of SC.
The fact its even a debate and there is multiple you tubers mentioning the drive 40 is a better buy, says a lot to me imo. |

From another thread here there is a rumor that the edrive40 will be AWD, 2 motors, with 400HP available to order November 2022. No mention of range. The RWD will be the edrive35. I, however, could not confirm this rumor with my dealer. I too would prefer AWD but don't need all the M stuff or the $10k price hike for it.

I wonder what they would do differently to get more range out of the xdrive version as their currently is just a 12 mile range difference between both current models when paired with 19" wheels?
Bigger battery perhaps and it would be more of a long-range model?

Has anyone found any information on the web indicating the i4 xe40 will happen? I can't even get any info from my dealer. I preordered the e40 but now I'm thinking that I should cancel and wait for this model.

It's on a BMW press release for future models, I'll have to dig up the document but it has an edrive35 and an xdrive40 model listed. However, it did not indicate if it would be for the US-market, but rather just trim levels that would be introduced.

Interesting reading this thread, Especially the fact that there are owners here who have transitioned to an i4 from some lovely motors, 440i M5 and M3s (maybe these are as well as).
I currently own an M235i for the last 5 years and before that tuned n54 335i, but now have the opportunity to get a company car. I test drove the Polestar 2 LRDM Performance over 5 days recently and did have the i4 e40 booked for the end of Jan, but have now secured an i4 M50 for a few days with the next week or two. I ordered an M50 loaded.
I would have gone with the i4 X40 with a similar build but after looking at the out the door price the M50 was less than $2,000 more than the X4. The dealer stated that allocations for the i4 X40 are much harder to come by so no discount from MSRP at all. I figured the M50 would long term be worth the <2,000. |

Are you a Normal person, reading here for general info and feel about this model before you purchase? Do you recall a time when No One on the road NEEDED 500hp and AWD to get to the mall? You'll be perfectly happy, maybe even thrilled with the e40. As an all-round daily driver, this car is the best. It's primarily the wife's but I drive it every single possible time I can. Its a delight And saves me on gas for my X5! OR Are you the hardcore BEEMER nut with multiple M / M-sport cars in your signature and you have to beat everyone else off the line at every intersection? Do you have money to burn, and won't be driving 300-mile road trips often? The M50 will surely please you then. ps - I see an X5 and X3 in your sig. I think either of these cars will delight you in relation to an SUV. The M50 will just blow your socks off faster than the e40. My X5 50 is a beast, but so big and heavy feeling. i4 is no lightweight but just feels more liberating. Range - for all of our normal driving, charging at home meets all our needs. In almost a year I've only needed to charge away from home twice, on road trips. So range is a thing, but it really depends on your use case.

It wasn't all about the power for me. I wanted the AWD and also Merino leather where you have the Ivory white leather but still have the black dash. In the UK you can't option either with the 40.
Also, in terms of price, if you spec up a 40 so its fully loaded, you're not far off. If I get as close to my spec as possible, it's about 8% more on the list price. That compares to the base models with no options where it's:

In the past few months, on Northeast USA city roads and highways, I've been alternately driving either an i4 35 (not 40) and an i4 M50. They feel almost identical to me under "normal" driving conditions. There hasn't been snow when I drove the M50, so I can't speak to differences in snowy weather; but in dry or rainy weather, the RWD 35 and AWD M50 handle about the same in my experience.
