No ConnectedDrive / Known Comms issue?

Hi from Australia, can anyone help with this fun little issue?

Just purchased a second-hand 2019 i3S to go with our existing Rex, but have hit a problem trying to get the vehicle ConnectedDrive to link to the App. When we go to Connected Drive>Messages to get the app linking code, the 'Messages' menu item is simply not there. Pressing 'Options' to refresh via 'Update BMW Services' does not work as that menu item is greyed out and the message 'Function is not available'. Have tried to soft reboot by holding down the volume button - does not work. Have tried hard resetting by removing fuse 115 - also does not work!

So, after chat with BMW support, five days later received a very odd and cryptic message back from them, here's the key paragraph.

"Our Technical Team has concluded their investigation and confirmed that your vehicle is affected by a known issue where it experiences difficulty transmitting data using the embedded sim in the vehicle, which impacts the functionality of the ConnectedDrive Services like the Remote functions and vehicle linking."

They go on to say they are working on it but don't give a timeline to get a fix.

My suspicion is that either the Telematics Control Unit (TCU) is the problem, or maybe the TCU backup battery needs replacing. This vehicle is (or should be) 4G so it should not be a victim of the 3G switch off. Should also add that the main 12v battery was just replaced. so that's unlikely to be the problem.

This issue could be unique to Australia, but has anyone else encountered this 'known issue' with data comms? Better still, does anyone know a fix?

I’ve had a related issue on my X3 with I drive 7 where I also have to enable data sharing in the car as well to get the app showing data updates again.

You definitely have to turn it on within the car else the APP won't update at all.
