It's 9%+ in California (depending on your county). This is a tax imposed on all purchases/sales of automobiles, in addition to licensing.

Suggesting privately how to cheat on taxes is not a winning strategy for selling your car at a price higher than new cars are now being discounted. If you want to sell the car you're going to have to get down to the $100,000 range. And even that may not be enough.
I'm not happy about it, but these cars have depreciated in value faster than a new V-12 Mercedes with a Renntech body kit and 22 inch wheels.

Yeah, tax evasion is probably not the best incentive to offer prospective buyers.

Ugh, I never said anything about the i8 being beneath me what are you talking about. I said it was slow, dull and boring. I bought my car brand new from the dealer so I paid taxes on it.
I've never met someone who is so proud about paying resell tax on a car to the US Government knowing what the Government uses the money to spend the money on. |

I can see why you didn't like your i8. Understanding and appreciating how things work does not seem to be your forte. Those of us who have read the i8 manual and understand how it works do appreciate it. (Among other things, we know how to put it in "sport" mode. It's plenty fast when we do. It's just as quick as my M4 and much faster than my old M6.)

I hang out with a bunch of guys that have exotics and other high performance cars. The avg mpg of this fleet driven the way we drive hovers around 10 mpg. It is our norm. So much so that I began behaving as though getting 9-11 mpg (My M6) was normal. The look of shock and horror on a few friends faces when I shared this statistic with them quickly brought me back to reality. Hopefully this brought you back to reality regarding the performance of the i8. Cheers-mk P.S. Pay your taxes. If you choose not to, don't broadcast it on a global internet message board. Lifestyle audits are a real thing. Last edited by MKSixer; 03-03-2016 at 06:31 AM.. |

If you believed in all of what you said, then perhaps you should've test driven the vehicle before blindly purchasing one. However, if you did test drive the i8, then I am at a loss for any flattering or supportive comments pertaining to the rational behind your i8 purchase. Either way, an informed and rational purchase would avoid any future disappointments, let alone the need for making condescending remarks towards car enthusiasts and their choice of vehicle, such as in this forum.

I suspect your "work around" is to "declare" a lower sale price to the buyer in paperwork but get your fill asking. That is not a "work around," it's fraud. And you or buyer will have to declare sale price under penalty of perjury anyway when registering or titling.

It turns out he got $10K off the list price on his i8 and was willing to take a $10K bath and give someone a "great deal" on the purchase price (from him) once that person followed his advice and failed to pay due taxes. But most of us who have had i8s know that the depreciation at this point is going to be a lot more than $10K. Finally, I note our original thread starter is from California (he has said so in other posts on other threads), but he puts down Arizona as his location. Quote:
This has been a very revealing thread. And not so much on what a used i8 is worth.
