Certainly comparisons to the EV market leader are natural (and fair), but there are other players in the game now too. I'm going to avoid the T word for a moment to look at another potential competitor that has been getting very favorable press and whose range topping model is coming to market later this year: the Ford Mach-E.

In particular, let's pit the top of the line i4 M50 against the top-of-the-line Mach-E GT Performance.

i4 M50
MSRP: $65,900 + $995 Destination
Range: 245mi
Power: 536hp
0 - 60mph: 3.9s
Length: 188.3in
Wheelbase: 112.8in
Cargo Space: ?

Mach-E GT Performance
MSRP: $64,900 + $1100 Destination
Range: 235mi
Power: 480hp
0 - 60mph: 3.5s
Length: 186.7in
Wheelbase: 117.5in
Cargo Space: 59.7ft³

I think the Mach-E GT Performance makes for an interesting match-up because the hype for that vehicle is sky-high right now. And while it's not perfect, the excitement it promises makes it easier to look past the lower range vs. other models in the lineup.

Anyway, on paper at least, these two look pretty evenly matched. Sure, they are different types of vehicles, the BMW being a passenger car while the Ford is an SUV. But with the hatchback, the i4 should offer SUV-like versatility. And it will surely have the more premium interior. So, I think the i4 M50 will be a hit. It's the first truly affordable, high performance premium electric luxury car (non-SUV) from a traditional automaker. And while there are EVs that offer greater range, the i4 M50 is far from the worst in the premium category (see Porsche Taycan, Jaguar i-Pace, Audi e-tron, Polestar 2). I will point out though, that the lack of a mid-range AWD i4 seems like a pretty major omission that BMW should rectify quickly. I think that's where the real meat of the market is.

(And yes, it's true that there's the Mach-E GT base model for $5k less, with 15mi more range. But, if you skip the top Performance Edition model you lose two very important features: performance bucket seats and electronically adjustable suspension.)

I really like the looks of the m50. Might be my next car.

The i4 M50 range is atrocious. You can't take a long trip past 240 miles as you'll waste time charging. That's around less than 3 hrs of usage on a full charge that range.

What will the range be of future M cars, 150 miles?

536 hp
586 lb-ft
0-62mph in 3.9 … Wow.

Since BMW always understate acceleration time, I'm curious to know the real world tested acceleration time.

245 mile range on the M50 is not good enough. In the winter, that will be 170-180 and it will only get worse from there as time goes by. I owned an i3 for nearly 5 years and I'm a long way from being interested in an electric car again. The tech is just not there yet.

The ICE cars today are the best ICE cars that mankind has ever produced.

The electric cars today are the worst electric cars that mankind will ever produce.

Take your pick.

Exactly, the specs are a bummer: 1st, the i4 will be available only in RWD configuration (at least the first edition) and 2nd, if you go with the AWD one, i.e. the M50 you end up with a ridiculous range.

However, on the positive side: "The BMW i4 can charge its high-voltage battery there at up to 200 kW. When hooked up to high-power charging station of the type, the i4 can take enough energy on board in just ten minutes to increase range by up to 90 miles."

This effectively means that you can recharge pretty quickly in locations where fast-charging stations are available. Recently, Teslabjorn tested the Audi e-Tron GT, which charges also at 200+ kW and it was faster than needed in most cases, which is good for long trips.

Take a look at this video: youtube.com/watch?v=jsq7Sp_YHo0

It depends on the charging speed. It looks like you can add 50% of the range in about 20 minutes. Five hours of driving with a 20 minute stop works for me.
If you are talking about +1000 miles road trip in a day, then yeah, that is not going to be fun.

BMW at it again with these terrible grills. Instead of re-pivoting to designs that will sell better, they double down. Stupidity at its finest.

So after staring at these cars a bunch, I realized that this front end is actually a decent bit different than the regular 4 series. The total area of the grille is smaller and reshaped, and there are a number of areas where soft edges have become sharp lines. It's really tough to tell on the frozen blue, but it's looking to be a similar story on the fenders - the 4 series has smooth curved lines both front and rear, while on the i4 we have sharp lines just like on the M4 (though obviously without the extra 1.5 inches of flare).

Take a look:

Doesn't look as bad as some pictures posted the other day. It actually gives me renewed optimism for the M440 GC.

Majority of these cars will be leased so unlikely to be driven on road trip

During the COVID pandemic I was driving 8 hr trips. Quite frankly my cars sit at airports and when it's time for lease end I put the miles on the last 8 months.

As I stated above, I will road trip my cars towards lease end to put on the miles.

So is BMWFS going to offer 5,000 miles per year lease terms now?

240mi range is a bit disappointing but not too surprising, bmw wants these cars to be sporty and handle well, lots of heavy batteries aint going to cut it. Prices seem fair.

Then you would be the 1% that couldn't use the car. For the majority, it's got plenty of range.

240 miles might not sound like much, but if the i4 is like other German EVs, you will likely get 240 miles of usable range, maybe more.
