Interior Trim Removal

Hi,

Does anyone have any experience of removing the interior trim?

I would like to swap the standard plastic inserts for the carbon fiber ones. I have pulled trim off in other cars, but don't know what is involved in the i8 and can't find any information.

If it is fairly straightforward, but there is a daisychsin of panels to get at some parts I might contact a specialist.

Any information or thoughts would be appreciated.

What pieces specifically are you looking to remove? There are lots of them...

Which car (Roadster or Coupe)? What year? The interior panels are quite different in some areas...

I've removed basically ALL the panels from the pass kick panel back to the entire rear of the cabin in the 2019 i8 Roadster, but I have a hunch that's not what you are asking about...

Do you have a proper set of trim removal tools? They are quite generic and not expensive...

i had carbon fiber trim fitted by the dealer. Price they charge is far from astronomical. I am very happy to let them deal with it rather than me trying to fiddle around with fragile parts and break something. I would leave it well alone and bring it to your dealer.

My dealer did mine too.

I had the Carbon Fibre retrofit done to my i8.

Lovely, high quality carbon, with a fantastic texture. Non glossy, which is perfect for the i8.

Far better quality than the carbon trim used in all other BMWs, or elsewhere on i8.

I'm sold!

I have had carbon fibre interiors on all my cars, and am not a fan of the metallic blue plastic parts (it cheapens the rest of the interior imo).

I have the ceramic gear knob, so will leave that as is. I have seen that you can get ceramic i-drive dials, so may enquire on compatibility with a view of doing that at the same time.

I may ask the dealer for a quote - I don't want risk snapping or cracking anything during the changeover

It's official BMWi, the same as the factory fit on new i8 cars where the buyer ticks the option. It was supllied and fitted by my normal BMWi dealer. I'm in England though.

I suggest asking your dealer in the US

Nonsense.

If the Shop Monkeys at BMW can remove and install trim - so can you. They may have more experience doing this but they surely won't take as much care as you will.

I've learned a long time ago, that if I have the proper tools and time, I can be much more certain of a proper repair. The folks who work at the shop are just regular folks, and by and large, most folks just do the minimum crappy work they can get away with (IMHO). Its really very hard to find people who do really good work any more (in any capacity). (Just to be fair, the work I've had done at BMW dealerships has by and large been much better than average though..)

"If you want something done right, do it yourself". Who knows how many broken clips and stripped screws a shop is leaving behind unseen...

A set of trim tools is really cheap $10-12 and its really not that difficult...

Exactly as Jas has put above! Dealer “ swapped “
The bits in question, the originals are in a box in my garage!
The 3 things that have now been done from original are: wheels painted Gloss Black, carbon trim as seen on this thread, and ive de badged the rear!! All 3 things have made it look stunning! I stopped off at Local Lambo garage today, and reps came out to look at it! All agreed one of best i8’s they have seen!! 👍

I really need to get around to doing that 3rd thing then - debadging

I've also had my wheels painted, but black & blue in my case:

Thanks, I did intend it to do it last summer but never got around to it.

I will wait until a hot day, as I may as well make the job easier

I only want to remove the "e-drive" badge, and will leave the "i8" one.
