Arrow New Potential Owner of a BMW i8

Hello guys and gals, just registered and have some interest on the i8 and couple of practical questions.

I would like to describe couple of routes in terms of miles/km distance and to have your feedback if it is possible the i8 to be driven without charging the batteries by using the power plug/socket equipment at home/road etc. Is it possible?

1) about 40kms (24.8miles) daily commute
2) about 300kms (186.4miles) one way on highway on weekends

Your feedback is highly appreciated and thank you in advance.

Not entirely sure what you're asking. You never have to plug the i8 in, but doing so increases the fuel efficiency (obviously at the cost of electricity).

You won't make either of those trips on electric alone, but it will easily cover the longer one without needing to refuel.

Perhaps I did not describe it correctly. I was considering doing this trips combined and not only on electric drive. But from your reply I understand that I don’t have to plug the i8 to use it.

If you get a later model with the increased battery capacity and can plug the car in ( like at work) you may not need the combustion engine much. As long as you have gasoline in the tank, you will not get stranded without charging the car as previous poster confirmed.

Your daily commute is close to what's possible in pure electric mode if the car is fully charged, but only with the new i8 as it has almost twice the range of the old one. In the winter it might not work out. You need to drive economically. If you don't make it the combustion engine kicks in, that's it. No problem.

Your highway trip will be pretty fuel economical but won't work on electricity alone.

You can do everything with the i8, old or new, you can do with a combustion engine car plus drive up to 50km without using fuel.

You can make your 25 mile commute entirely on electric if you choose. The weekend trip will require hybrid power, and you can make it RT on 3/4 tank of gas.
