I'm back to i8 after trying M850i for a while;
The technology on M850i is indeed newer and different, more horse power, but I really missed the i8. Such a special car and I love the sound of the electric engine!

I had an 840i as a loan car, lovely as you say, but just a bit dull in comparison. Guess the M850i has a bit more fire in its belly, but apart from Top Trumps its never all about the stats.

Hi
I was in the same boat as you. Had an i8 coule, went for an M850i, had it for 2 months (drove 500 miles) and did not like the heft was on the road in the US although I felt good when I drove it after ED in Munich. Now I got an i8 roadster. So I understand your point. Enjoy.

May I pay my two cents and join this boat?

Yes the M850 may be technically up to date, yes the engine power is amazing and yes it offers trunk space.
But it doesn't have a soul and it always felt like an old mans car to me.

Same feeling, to a lesser degree, switching from F80 M3 to i8. The i8 is no 2002tii, but it is relatively nimble, with good road feel. And despite the 'sportiness', it is an excellent highway cruiser and DD.

I might be bias but I think the instant torque of i8's electric engine is much more fun that the V8; at least from full stop;
And the look of i8 is still awesome; if you like people starting conversations with you all the time 🤣

I preferred the power oversteer (and manual tranny) of the M3, but love the CF monocoque of the i8.

Good decision— wouldn't trade my i8 for an M8!
(I have the amazing F90 M5 comp but still take out the i8 every time when the sun is shining)

Somewhat related, but I have an F80 that's almost paid off and am considering adding an i8 to the stable. Would you say it's worth it?

I think you should try it first; find a Turo and test drive it;
You will get a lot of attention on the i8; some people don't like that, I don't mind it

IMO the i8 is the most brilliant and innovative BMW from the past decade. All BMWs are special; but some are more special than others.
