That is definitely the Range Rover Sport R chasing the i8. The estimated power on that rig is said to be 550hp.

I don't understand the value proposition for this car. Hasn't Tesla already cornered the market for that demographic ? Plus the Model S is all electric, have remarkable 0 - 60 numbers, and has a 300 mile range on the battery.

Its looks make it look like it should be going a lot faster. Doesn't it have around 350 BHP with the electric motors? Being that the body is all CF, low center of gravity, and 350 BHP, it should be somewhat flying around that course. If not then its all Norbert Reithofer's fault for taking the sport out of the Ultimate Driving Machines...

Looks heavy and slow. Doesn't look like 4.6 0-100 kph. Who knows though, could have been limited testing, will reserve judgement for now; but that RR Sport R-S @48 seconds sounds like a beast about to tear the i8 apart battery cell by battery cell.

This car is not a competitor to a GT3. I don't think it will matter that it's relatively slow compared to other "sports" cars. This car looks amazing and is packed with technology. That will appeal to well to do people looking to make a statement (I'm green!) but aren't racers or even enthusiasts. Look how many rich people bough Priuses for the same reason. Now they can buy something that looks as exotic as an Aventador but gets fantastic mileage and, they can plug it in at the charging station next to a Chevy Volt or a Fusion plug in Hybrid.

The i8 is something new and different than what is currently available today. I think it's brilliant and if I start saving now maybe I can buy one in 3 years when they start to come off lease!

Am I the only one who thinks the i8 should sport the 760's absolutely stunning V12...in the middle?

So many people here are misunderstanding the point of the i-series. The i8 isn't intended to go head to head with a 911 GT3. That's laughable. The i8 is a technology showcase. It's a lot of new technology, which means there are going to be trade-offs.

BMW isn't expecting that everyone is going to want one. They've scaled back their expectations in a big way. The buyer for this car is someone who is more interested in making a statement about their own priorities than they are getting the most performance for their dollar.

I don't get it then. If they want a technology showcase and not something that is performance oriented, why package it as a carbon fiber, super light car with supercar-esque looks, and then take it to the Nurburgring???

If I had $125k to blow, I'd buy a 2013 Viper GTS and call it a day. Plenty of technology there. "Green" minded folk need to be educated and look into how manufacturing and disposing all those batteries affect the environment.

It's not just about technology, it's about the way the technology is used. We're not yet at a point where a performance hybrid will hold its ground with a performance petrol powered car, but someone has to take the first steps. The choice of carbon fiber is obvious. It's the strongest, lightest material you can use in the construction of an automobile. You take it to the Nurburgring because it's the best proving ground in the world for a performance oriented vehicle.

Saying "If I had $125k to blow, I'd buy CAR X and call it a day", is a really narrow minded way of framing the problem. Depending upon who you are and what you want, CAR X might be any number of things. You're still missing the point. The point is to build the best hybrid car they can, which still focuses on the things that make a BMW a BMW. I'm not saying you have to buy one. I'm not even saying you have to want one, but there are plenty of people who will.

Yes, there is a good argument that many "green" cars still have an equivalent ecological impact as a petrol powered car, depending upon how you do the accounting of macro-ecological factors, but we have to start somewhere. The fact that today's "green" cars may only break even with a petrol powered car over their lifespan is not a good reason to stop trying to improve.

I hope this forum is around in 25 years, because all you guys shitting all over the i8 are going to sound like the guys that would rather keep their horse back when the automobile showed up on the scene.

Actually, Porsche is at that point. You just have to be a billionaire to buy it.

this car takes on a very awkward combination of performance, efficiency and price. at this price, unless you really care about green, why not buy ANY other car in that range? i dont understand what BMW is trying to do here, if you want to make a technology showcase with CFRP structure and electric drive, why not make the motors 100hp more? 345hp, 4.5sec doesn't scream state of the art tech to me, look at the model s.

BMW is trying so hard to differentiate itself with the rest of the supercar market and trying to establish it's own category(poor man's porsche 918). but can a person wanting to buy the i8 not cross shop it with cars like 911, R8? if you look like a supercar, you better perform like one, otherwise... what's the point.

but i guess a certain group of people will find the below average performance, good mileage, and especially the looks very very appealing. you have to be wanting to make a statement for yourself as being "green" really bad in order to buy one of these.
