AC Schnitzer launches the BMW i8 with Carbon Aerodynamic Accessories

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
The most advanced sports car of our time has now been optimized further by some AC Schnitzer innovations. At the Geneva International Motor Show in March 2017, the Aachen-based tuning specialist will launch the plug-in hybrid BMW i8 from Munich with new carbon aerodynamic components and special livery.

The i8 by AC Schnitzer, with 25 mm lowering at the front and 20 mm at the rear, is significantly closer to the road than the standard vehicle, ensuring greater stability in all cornering situations.

AC Schnitzer carbon front spoiler elements, carbon side skirts and carbon Racing rear wing ensure that driving pleasure can be fully enjoyed on acceleration from both the powerful petrol engine and the hybrid electric motor.

In addition, a carbon middle front spoiler, the carbon bonnet top including middle strut, and the carbon front side wings further emphasize the sporting attributes of the BMW i8.

The carbon air outlets at front and rear not only give the i8 that certain visual extra, but also provide a more intelligent structure of the wheel arch vents.

Carbon side skirts on the left and right, in combination with the three-piece carbon rear diffuser, provide the suction effect in the underfloor region of the i8. The result: better pressure distribution and even more downforce.

Aesthetically, the BMW i8 by AC Schnitzer with its carbon door handle recesses and mirror covers, the newly restyled BMW kidney grille, AC Schnitzer logos (160 mm) on left and right, and the special Inferno Red Chrome livery, offers that added value for every tuning fan.

Aluminum pedal set, aluminum footrest and floor mats of velours emphasize the light touch of the interior design, and at the same time highlight the sophisticated look of the i8 by AC Schnitzer.

When it comes to wheel sets, the Aachen company has come up with another innovation: the lightweight AC1 Forged Alloy Wheels in BiColor or Anthracite were specially developed for the sports car, combining hybrid looks with sporting design. Compared with the BMW Turbinenstyling 625 in 20", the wheels (front 8.5J x 21" and rear 9.5J x 21") save a good 4.4 kg in weight and therefore improve the transverse dynamics. Fitted with corresponding tires (245/35 R 21 front and 285/30 R 21 rear) and optional wheel painting in any color desired, AC Schnitzer once again demonstrates that over 30 years of innovation have guided company philosophy, and that sporting performance and style can always be revolutionized into something new.

Here you can find the first video of the i8 by AC Schnitzer with carbon aerodynamics.

Enjoy!

How much weight does it add?

What has happened to the aerodynamics as a result?

Is the rear wing needed? Does it do anything?

By slamming it will it make front fender clearances lower as well?

What are the doo dads that have been hung from the front and rear quarter panels? And what are those strakes on the front?

How much does it cost to Schnitzerize your i8?

(I do like the red color.)

I think they went overboard with the red one (the fender vents are just plain gross...AutoZone level stuff). There are a couple pieces I'd be interested in, but why do they have to stick their logo on every single one? And it's not even nicely integrated...it just sticks out.

Here are my questions:

Does the bonnet insert require the "middle strut" or can it be used separately? Because that middle strut looks silly.

Is the logo just a decal on the middle front spoiler, mirror covers and rear diffuser? Can it be removed? The front spoiler looks like it may have an indent where the logo sits, is that true?

Lowering will always reduce clearances, it's a risk everyone takes on lowered vehicles. Weights & Airflow data was not provided in the datasheet, you would need to contact AC Schnitzer directly for that info.

I agree, the red (or any "electric" color) looks great on the i8 platform.

The provided logos are geldome decals, its up to you whether or not to install them. They have a small pocket to go into. We had the same on our M4 project, I thought it looked great with them.

The front spoiler support is needed, Whi8le the spoiler is quire rigid, the lip may sag over extended time if not used.

Thanks for the reply.

Just a couple clarifications: Do the mirror covers use geldome decals? They just look like lettering from the picture. Also, are they replacements or stick on top of the mirror?

And I'm not sure if we are talking about the same piece regarding the "front spoiler support". I'm talking about the hood insert/replacement. I'm not sure why it would require the middle strut, as the factory insert doesn't have any sagging issue.

The ACS lettering on the mirror caps is etched into place and cannot be removed.

The bonnet insert can be ordered without or without the center brace, it's purely optional.

Pricing has not yet been announced, but should be set before the Geneva Motor Show.

Thanks. That's too bad. I wish they'd consider the option of not having it...I personally don't feel like advertising them for free after paying for it

I like some of it, though shown all together is way over board. I have had AC stuff on previous cars and if this stuff follows that pattern it is probably pretty costly.

It looks way cooler, love the rear wing makes it look fast and more aggressive. And I like the lack of the electric blue paint inlays. For the launch on the original concept the blue outline was fine, but it looks way cooler and one solid color, more clean and classy.

I don't know that the i8's "slow," but it wouldn't bother me in the least if BMW added a fourth cylinder to the engine.

Itīs a welcome addition to a highly advanced sportscar, i think the original still look excellent, iīd like to see the spider in this ACS blend.

There are tuning programs for i8s if desired, different info for a different thread.

IMHO, the ACS aero components flow very well as a complete package for those looking to stand out from the standard "i8 Look".

My questions were never answered. So I assume the "aerodynamic" parts are faux aero.

Actually, I responded to your question in Post #6.

Parts for the i8 program are cosmetic only, I doubt you'll find any aftermarket company outside of track-only parts that supply wind-tunnel numbers.

M4 with AC Schnitzer carbon aerodynamics in the wind tunnel

Feel free to follow up with ACS directly, as they have actually done this for their M3/M4 program.

3 of your questions are essentially the same, there are no figures for aero as explained earlier. All parts (including rear wing) are considered cosmetic. All parts are autoclaved pre-impregnated Carbon Fiber and ultra light.

Pricing has not yet been announced, but should be set before the Geneva Motor Show.
