Non BMW maps - EV integration
Sadly BMW does not allow Apple Maps access to car battery information as per link below. Does anyone know if BMW gives Google or Waze (or another 3rd party map app) access to battery information?
If not do people find BMW maps in iDrive 8.5 any good? I was quite disappointed with BMW map routing in my 2021 xDrive45e which I believe was iDrive7. https://support.apple.com/guide/ipho...hc5e3a4b4b/ios |

I use built-in navigation 99% of the time since I find it to be on par with Google and Apple.

That said, BMWs maps are pretty good and what I use most of the time. It does make some odd routing decisions that the others would never screw up, but it is not a huge deal. Using Apple Maps is ridiculously easy through CarPlay and has almost the same level of UX integration as the native system. The only things you give up with Apple Maps is the map view in HUD and the AR view (which looks awesome).

How I look at it (I could be overthinking it and wrong) is every time you use the iDrive navigation system, you are allowing BMW to use that data to make more accurate and precise routing and predictions for future navigation/long-distance travel for everyone. This would be crowdsourcing information. I think the navigation is great and honestly no true need to use Google/Apple Maps unless for very particular circumstances. When using non-integrated systems the car loses its automated functions such as pre-conditioning when navigating to a DC fast charger that was routed for a trip.

The infotainment system is entirely built by Garmin, including the hardware. Garmin has essentially invented car navigation.
I prefer to use Google Maps when traffic is intense and picking the optimal right makes the difference. That's rare though. 99% of times, I use the built-in system. It works fine.

BMW in car nav is far superior to Apple Maps when it comes to viewing and selecting alternative routes. I actually keep the alternative route view up as my main nav screen so I can see real time traffic impacts on the alternatives and current route. Also, much easier to zoom in and out on the map using the scroll wheel which you cannot do with Apple Maps.

Whilst there are advantages to many of the most common Navigation apps, I use Waze almost 100% of the time via ACP. It’s super simple to use, and it’s ability to rapidly offer advice 2/2 input from other current users is extremely useful.

Android auto integrates Google maps in the driver display well and in the idrive screen you can have chargers en route.
