I also had paid for the tailgate option and was refunded because of the parts shortage, my dealer told me I have all the wiring there but needed the control unit, it would cost $600 for the control unit and $800 for labor since the back bumper would have to be removed to install the control unit! Crazy priced…

Come down to Circle BMW, they don't charge that much for labor for computer programming ... buy the part for like $300 online and install it yourself. bumper does not need to be removed ... complete BS to justify the retarded price they gave you.

Read my post earlier in the thread with instructions

Instructions attached. The bumper has to come off to replace the sensor strip used for contactless opening, but not to replace the control unit.

Yeah, I replaced the control module myself and I don’t think it was that difficult at all. Perfectly fine DIY project.

I will say that it helps to get a car ramp (~$50) and wheel chocks (~$50) to give you a little more space to look around underneath.

You just need to remove 3 panels (center front, center back and right side facing the trunk as shown in hugo_nz’s diagrams) with a 8 & 12 socket and then pull the existing control module out. Makes it a lot easier if you have a cordless impact driver!

Pulling out the module was the trickiest bit:
  1. make sure to pinch down on the cable connectors and pull. They are pretty stuck in there.
  2. Same with the control module. You can use a flat head screwdriver and push the clip down (just under the control unit’s ports). You will have to yank the control unit out a bit as it is also stuck in there.

The rest is pretty much reversing what you did. Make sure to torque the bolts back to 2.3 Nm (don’t use any cordless tools to tighten) as specified in the diagrams.

I attached pictures of the module I pulled out of my car. From the exterior, there were basically identical (apart from weight and labels). For a second I wondered if my car already have the right module but just didn’t have the appropriate firmware. But the more I looked at it the more I realized the parts are actually different.

Let us know how you make out with your dealer coding the retrofit. Should be uneventful, but would like to hear.

Has anyone successfully had the tailgate hands free retrofit added yet by the dealer? Mine is there now and dealer says it has everything but the control box, which they ordered for me and BMW is saying it should work?

Thanks

Honestly at the time of pickup of the i4 was the first I have ever heard this. Has anyone else received similar / heard the same?

I saw you posted a PDF agreement that BMW would retrofit hands free tailgate for MY22 vehicles that had the hands free tailgate option removed. My G01 X3 LCI was one of those vehicles affected and I'm wondering what the parts number you needed to ordered to get and the labor costs to get the hands free installed.
