Hands free Tailgate retrofit

Hi All,

Has anyone with a deleted tailgate sensor tried to or asked about being able to retrofit? (Not for free, but by paying for the labor/parts ourselves)

Like so many other functions in the IX the handsfree tailgate operation is monitored by the BCP module. The first image attached shows the hardware I presume is missing when the handsfree tailgate is deleted. This module connects to the BCP via the LIN bus and gets power from the front power box (shown in the second image). In theory the retrofit should be straightforward: install the evaluation module and two antennas, connect to the power and LIN bus, add FA and VO code the car.

The challenge here is that only BMW can perform the retrofit since there are no software files publicly available for the BCP module. The missing files makes a DIY retrofit impossible. It’s not showing as an official retrofit or conversion in the dealer ISTA software either so no BMW dealer will do it. Maybe BMW will add the option at some point, but who can say for certain.

Order parts expedited from Germany ... very, extremely limited inventory worldwide of the control unit. Plan to install and have my local dealer perform the coding for the official retrofit with the HO-wort that is in the coding set for this retrofit coding.

Parts Needed:

61355A53D07
61358494948
61358494949

Expecting delivery of the parts in 1-2 weeks at this time. I took delivery of an i4 on Tuesday this week, and the dealer provided a BMW corporate acknowledgement form that indicated they would provide a free of charge retrofit later in 2022 when parts became available for the handsfree tailgate deletion.

This leads me to believe that my install of the parts in the iX should go fairly smoothly as the vehicle is likely prewired for the control unit power/LIN/ground that goes to it, with the connector likely taped up and tucked away behind the bumper, negating the requirement of running connections to these 3 wires at the source.

Hugo,

I'm not sure where in ISTA+ to check for / use HO-worts ... but I did see the following as it relates to I20 in my coding software from tokenmaster or one of the other 3 softwares I have.

HO-wort is available: ASMC

Wow, I had no idea that they were planning on a free of charge retrofit (even if it is just for the i4).

I guess this makes sense since it is not like they gave us credit back for the delete. And based on your input it looks like it is easy enough for them to install.

Wow thanks for the info! So the iX should be prewired, and only thing missing is the sensor unit itself and coding?

Should be simple enough to check since the module location is easily accessed. If pre-wired, then the connector should be visible as pointed out above.

You would check ISTA-P for retrofitting and conversions. And as above, even if you are able to add the option to FA in ESYS or the other tools there is no way to code the BCP since no PSDZdata is available for it, at least not as of the latest 4.36.40 ISTA package. This is a major factor holding back almost all meaningful coding options since the BCP in the IX replaces a number of previously independent modules and acts as the central source of truth for almost every other module.

I'm conserving space in my laptop I use for ista and don't have space for the programming data. Can you double-check for this HO-wort (retrofit) again?

Yes, I have these already printed and ready to go for when my iX finally gets here (hopefully this decade)

Any chance you wanna jump under your iX and take a looksie? Sorry, you're one of the few lucky ones that actually have the vehicle in-hand already

Lol no point in me checking since my car has the hands-free tailgate. It was built in March so missed that delete

Awesome, good for you! I'll find out soon enough ... plus it doesn't really matter much anyway, given I've already purchased the parts and they are en route from Germany

When we picked up our 2nd iX last week, the dealer said BMW is 100% not going to pay for the retrofit By them "crediting" us $100 for hands free tailgate, they covered themselves legally. Shady, crappy...but legal!

My dealer said if/when these parts become available, we are looking at around $1000 for the parts and labor.

Pretty lame they can deduct only $100 but charge you $1000+ for it afterwards.

When I took delivery of my 2022 530e, I had a whole slew of "$100 deletes"

At $100 each, this is what BMW deleted from my 530e:

Hands free tailgate
Passenger lumber
Digital Key
Harmon Kardon sound
Rear Climate

So yes...lame, shady, tacky, rude, crappy, but they covered themselves legally!!!

So when I picked up my mom's i4 a few weeks ago, we received the attached document at signing. This seems like a "corporate owe" where BMW absolutely is going to pay for the cost of the retrofit at some later date. My dealership that sold me the iX had no idea about this. Honestly at the time of pickup of the i4 was the first I have ever heard this. Has anyone else received similar / heard the same?
