Brake Noise

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Wondering if this is just me but has anyone noticed a bit of a grinding noise when braking? I drive mostly highway but when I am in bumper to bumper or driveway/parking speeds Ithe brakes seem to grind a bit. Rotors and pads seem fine. Im wondering if it's just that with Regen the brakes aren't clearing the crap off as well. Either way I don't like that sound in a 60k car. Before I waste time at the dealer I just wanted to see if that was unique to me.

You should have heard the brakes on my M8! In general, the higher performance the brake is, the worse it's going to sound, so just wear it like a badge of honor. If you go to a cars and coffee with exotics around, you'll see all the people in their $200k+ cars cringing at the sound of their brakes while they slowly roll in.

Does the "grinding" go away after a stop of two? I certainly get some crud if they aren't really used for a while that I would describe that way, but like 1 or 2 stops at a moderate speed cleans them quickly (don't even need to do a full bedding process).

You should hear M-Performance slotted and dimpled, two piece rotor/brake noise.

At below 25mph and when cold they rattle.

Like others have said, some cars soooo much worse. Our 2018 M6 brakes....they could have raised the dead!

That being said my '22 i4 M50 and our son's '23 i4 e40 brakes are silent!

I know they were forced to change the rotor material for epa reasons and they mark and look crappy but I feel like with the Regen they must not be clearing well. So verdict is if it's not metal on metal and everything is mechanically sounds we just deal with it then? I will just have to always drive fast and brake hard... Easy fix

This weird grinding noise is the same as i have i would say, also had this on the i3 due to how the brakes works with the regen at times you have to force brake to go beyond the regen so the pads grip a bit on the disks. Is most noticed after a car wash then they grind like a mad man until a couple of times braking when the surface rust is gone.

My father who had the first gen i3 when it came he had to take in the car for rotor brake change and pads because he never used his brakes only regen so they ended up rusting to that point that they had to be changed......

My i4 brakes are silent. Is your car garaged? Are you seeing a lot of rain/snow? If so, get in the habit of braking hard to clean rust/moisture off the rotors and pads.
