The article uses “could” and “might” a lot. So I think everything is still on the table.

Quote:
A further sticking point in the proposal to turn the i8 into a pure-electric model is the platform. Although it has been described as being suitable to support pure-electric capability, the existing model’s carbonfibre structure lacks the modularity of more modern skateboard-style designs used by rival car makers.
Quote:
Among the factors favouring BMW’s original hybrid plan for the next i8 is the relative ease and little cost with which the existing model’s carbonfibre and aluminium platform could be upgraded to accommodate a new petrol-electric hybrid drivetrain.

“I have a carbonfibre chassis in the i8, so I would like to use something like that with much more performance – electric and conventional,” Fröhlich said in response to queries on the future of the i8.

Good article, even though it appears rather misinformed about the relative costs of pure electric vs hybrid.

I think it’s ugly. The i8 has the looks, but not the performance. This thing has the performance but not the looks.

As expected, an edgy sharp cornered morph of the M1/i8, w future kidneys. Not in my plans as it lacks a rear seat.

Get the 0-100kph / 0-60mph in the sub- 3 sec range and it will be recognized as an 'exotic' a la Ferrari, Lambo, Tesla(?).

They retained the doors, and the hybrid powertrain, but why wouldn’t they retain the flying buttresses?

Same requirement for me as well. Not so much for the added seating but rather for the added storage space (a must have for my golf clubs).

Just a concept, so the end car won't look quite so radical (ugly). What concerns me more is the weight. This is HEAVY!

And if it loses rear seats, then it's competing with supercars. In which case it sounds like the performance won't be quite good enough (in 3 years' time).

But let's wait and see. If it undercuts the competition, then it has a chance.

I'm interested, but also struggling to see how it's better than the competition. And that is what made me buy the original i8 on release.

A few years away and it may be better looking in the flesh- although the original i8 concept looked much better to me.

Are they going to make a 2020 current gen i8?

Going full electric would’ve made it 2.1 tons heavy. So they stayed hybrid and are aiming for 3500 pounds

Agree re: weight. I have long been hoping for a 1000 Kilo Z2M. That would be a fun car.

Not many options to reduce weight on i8. Titanium exhaust, racing seats, BBS Fi-R rims.

It has to be the batteries and extra motors, plus maybe an extra 50kg for the bigger ICE.

Overall just far too heavy. I hoped for 1500kg.

But the final car may well be better, as in indeed the i8 was much better than the concept.

Interesting article... suggests that if they do build it, it will be mass produced and won't hold its value (just as the i8 has been).

Agree. A super heavy, ugly version of the i8 but with more power....and that depreciates just as badly. No thank you!

BMW need to learn to create a limited numbers halo car. Or no sale.

I absolutely love my i8, but once bitten twice shy.
