First I have to correct myself. Itīs the M54 engine, not the M54TU. there never was a M54TU only a M52TU.

The M54 is a fine engine. Very reliable (has anybody ever heard of engine problems in the E46 325 or 330?) and a fine performer. As a 323 with 174hp itīs definitely understressed and should be very reliable. Itīs the classic BMW I-6. Sweet sound, very smooth and a nicely usable torque band. If youīre not out for dragstrip performance, the M54 is just right for you. Itīll weigh about as much as the N52 since it has a heavier engine block (alloy instead of magnesium) but a lighter head (no valvetronic). So the handling will be as good as with the 325/330 setup. As for fuell efficiency, on paper it will not be better than the 325 or 330. The N52 has an efficiency advantage due to valvetronic and advanced thermal management. But beeing less of a pocket rocket, youīll probably burn less fuel with the 323 simply because itīs not as inviting to run hard as the 330 for example is.

I ran the M54 as a 3.0 Liter in my E46 330Ci SMG and I now run the N52 in my E90 330i and the fuel consumption is very similar. Whatever advantage the N52 has in efficiency is offset by the fact that I use the added power.

So fuel efficiency of the 323 should be just fine.

The 323 seem to be a good deal if the equipment level suits you. There just is no point in loading a 323 with all the extras or youīll be loosing much of the financial advantage.

Thereīs only one thing to look out for with the 323: Make sure you get different wheels. The stock wheels of the 323 are the ugliest set of rims ever to have made their way onto any stock BMW. Trade them in for at least a set of 17inchers (I like the style 158,159 or 160) and youīll be fine. Forgo the 162īs or any 18inchers on the 323, it does not have the power and torque to make those wide wheels work.

A 323 with nice 17inch wheels is a great ride. And budget friendly despite beeing a true BMW with all that matters to the joy of BMW ownership.

Just like to join in the conversation about UPsolute remaps for the new E90. You can check out some power specs at www.upsolute.ca, but those are rough numbers and will be confirmed again when they are finally released. Also top speed limiter can be removed as well and rev limiter raised if requested.

The E90 uses a Siemens MSV70 ECU where there is no programmer who can tune it through the OBD port, so ECU removal is neccessary for now. We do have a system which basically straps onto the ECU which has read/write function for reprogramming, so no soldering is neccessary. This is a completely new ECU unlike the MS42 and MS43's used in the E46's which is easily tuned through the port. 04-05 BMW's are using MS45 which cannot be tuned through the OBD port and is using the same system which will be tuning the MSV70.

We did tune quite a few of E46's, X5's, and 5 series with good feedback from the customer with good throttle repsonse, fuel mileage improvement and power gain through their own testing. A few of my customers noted on the E46 330 gained roughly 40-60km per tank of fuel. Usually with the optimized fuel and ignition maps for higher octane fuel, it will burn more efficiently as well with power gain. With more power in your car, there will also be less load on the engine as it does not as to work as hard to make it move, so thats why with additional power, usually you can get fuel mileage improvements. However if you drive aggressively, it will use more fuel than the factory program, so it greatly depends on your driving style.

I, myself have a E90 325i as well, so I would be testing the program out on my own car first when it's released before I start working on other cars.

And some clarification on the company, UPsolute. They are based in Austria, not Germany. UPsolute do have the largest dealer network around the work for chiptuning as they do provide tuning programs for almost any european automobile manufacturer which uses Bosch or Siemens ECU in their cars.

Our main market are usually VW and Audi's, but we have worked on alot of Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Volvo's, Smart car as well and some BMW's. We do also get cars from vw, audi, and porsche dealership around Toronto to work on as they provide chiptuning services at the dealership for their customers.

I have used Gary's service for my Smart ForTwo. I can confirm from my experience with the Upsolute remap that it is reliable and the performance gains are as they claim. I will be willing to try it on my 330i as well when it the upgrade is available.

I am doing a baseline dyno this week, and will do a dyno after the chip.

14.7 was before or after the retune? Anyone know what the time was for stock? Either way, that seems like a pretty respectable number.

The upsolute remaps are still not available yet as they are fixing some problems on the checksum with the program. But should be really soon. I will be trying out the program on my own E90 325i first and might do before and after dyno if I can.

I want the chip.
And Guess is right about fuel economic would be better with performance chip. My old VW GTi VR6 (96) was at 26/19 before the chip; and 32/25 after chip. When you have more power in the car, you are less likely to step hard on throttle.
So I want the chip once it comes out. What about BMW warranty?

So you're not getting the dyno before and after the chip? You seem to say you are doing a dyno before and then a dyno after chip AND new exhaust.
Keep us posted.

I will. I have my baseline done. I will be getting another before and after dyno done when the exhaust is manufactured, I will then get the chip and do a before and after, then if another manufacturer comes through, i will be doing a dyno with an intake as well.

Does anyone have any results on this chip yet? (i.e. dyno results before chip and after chip is what I am interested in...actually I would like to see the graph).

I also have a question for those that say a chip gives better fuel economy because with more HP the engine works less thus using less power, etc. If that is the case, the 325i and 330i are pretty much the same exact car, one just has 38ish more HP. So if the above theory is correct, then th 330i would get better fuel economy...right? From what I read and hear, the 325i cars are getting pretty much the same fuel economy as I am. Shouldn't the 330i get better fuel economy since it has more power?

Program for the E90 has not been released yet,but they are working on it. It has been delayed for quite a few times as the checksum for the program is still being tested out.
